Real ID Act info, everyone should read this
http://news.com.com/Homeland+Security+offers+details+on+Real+ID/2100-1028_3-6163509.html

Quote
update Hundreds of millions of Americans will have until 2013 to be outfitted with new digital ID cards, the Bush administration said on Thursday in a long-awaited announcement that reveals details of how the new identification plan will work.

Even though Maine totally refused and several states have anti-real id act bills in their legislatures, it looks like Bush is going to go ahead with this.

Should I apply for Canadian citizenship now to beat the rush?
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Well.

Bugger.
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

That's funny; I distinctly remember when discussing the fallacies of the UKs own attempts at ID cards, various American people were forecasting it could never happen in the US.......

If this happens, I'll just cut mine in half and throw it in the trash. They can suck my nice, big, drivers license if they want ID.

If this goes through, I'll probably do one of two things to the RFID tags:

1.)  Erase it and say it's defective.
2.)  Hack the chip to display something obnoxious like, "None of your ****ing business," in place of my address.

For the barcode, white out FTW.

But seriously, there is no way this will reduce the threat of terrorism.  For that to work, you would have to issue a card to every single person in the country, plus everyone who enters the country, even if it is just for a quick connecting flight to another country.  And you would have to be certain that the info the foreigners give is true.  They could lie and we wouldn't ever know about it till something happened.

Whoa whoa, nelly.  Wait a second here.

In other words, this is just another ID... with a barcode a'la credit cards... that stores our personal information?

And it's digital, so, in other words, all those fancy fingered hackers out there could more easily get our information off of the card?  ( Not that they can't get all they need off of a drivers liscense and a credit card, supposing you lost your wallet. )

WTF is Bush smoking?  This is so obviously moronic, it's not even funny... or scary!  This is going to be like forcing uniforms in a public middle school... alot of us are going to say screw it, break the thing to bits (after giving it a go-over with a powerful electromagnet) and move on with our lives.  What are they going to do, arrest us all?

I'm sorry for the rant-i-ness, but what, exactly, does Bush and his pals up on the Hill think this is going to solve?

People won't do it.  It's like when they tried to convert the nation to the metric system.

A law is just that, a law, if people don't obey it, and if it isn't enforced (which I doubt it will be) it won't work.

And it gets worse, miskat.  The personal information that is stored in that coupon-like barcode is unencrypted, so any store can ask you for ID, scan the barcode, and automatically add you to their mailing list without your permission.  Then there's the whole problem of identity theft...The new ID is enough to make you sick.

Congress called.

They said "Screw you."

QFT.  And the President wants your address for his new reeducation program.

There were many people who said it wouldn't even be proposed.

Those people are just guilty of underestimating GWB's idiocy.
Let's just hope we're not overestimating Congress's intelligence. Although I doubt that something like this would fly with the current Dem Congress - or even the Republicans in it.
