Gateway to the Galaxy
Behold, the Mega Gate! In my original story, the advanced races of the galaxy were limited to relatively close travel between stars and are incapable of traversing extreme distances. For example, the alien races can only travel as far as their empire network and can only travel from star to star. Since long distance travel was impossible the races made due with what they have. However in 4010CE the Homeworlders constructed gigantic gateways capable of sending travelers across the galaxy and then those travelers would build a gate on their end to complete the circuit. They eventually made contact with the other races on the other side of the galaxy. The majority of the other races were considerably more advanced, especially the Jha' Oull and Taimari, but the fact that the Homeworlders developed this tech felt like a punch to the face to the other races. Though the Homeworlders kept the source of their gate's capability secret, they shared the gates with other races, uniting the galaxy.

The Mega Gate is HUGE! They are approximately 8.8km in diameter, larger than most capital ships in length. The sheer size of the gates allows extreme traffic through them, greatly increasing trade capability and military mobility as dozens of ships can enter the gate at once. For those of you who need examples, the Mega Gate works much like a Stargate from SG-1 in that 2 gates are needed and one way traffic only depending on who activated which gate. However unlike the Stargates, Mega Gates can only have one single companion exit like a true gateway. Trying to force the connection will not work because of a special treaty preventing that. This was done to ensure that ship traffic remains as fast as possible.

In game, the gate dwarfs the Knossos GREATLY. I don't have a screen of the comparison, sorry but this is big. These gates will play a major role in the campaign's 3 different perspectives.

Re: Gateway to the Galaxy
Odd you should call them Homeworlders, the first thing I thought when I saw that was 'Balcora Gate!'.

Nice model :)

Re: Gateway to the Galaxy
That's a very nice model, too bad it'll never be used in a Freespace universe game.

For a lack of a better name, yes part of that name was derived from a time when I was looking in a store and saw "Homeworld2". So I just thought, "hmm, not a bad name for a planet!". Also it is an original name I suppose.

Yes, well in my universe the gates are only used for extreme distance traveling while regular subspace engines are used for short jumps. Ah, btw the name Mega Gate was derived from Tachyon. Poor Logan, being sent off to the Fringe with no way back home.

Very nice. Now, let's see some comparison shots so we can truly appreciate the size.

Also; does it rotate? Or are those panels static?

Well, for my part, I'd just completed the campaign again yesterday, so I have an excuse that it was sort of hovering in my mind anyway ;)

I deleted comparison pictures a long time ago and I'm too busy to fetch one. It doesn't rotate, it is static and stiff.

Re: Gateway to the Galaxy
oyu can amke it rotate by making it a subobject, putting a cube in the middle of it, fkipping the cubes normals, and set it to rotate around the cube in modelview/PCS
