ok, so I get home tonight and after some time I notice that some of the icons on my desktop are diferent, and after a moment I realise, they are some AVI files, so I'm thinking somehow quicktime took over again, so I try to open one and, BAM! windows media player want's me to validade windows, cause it's aparently been upgraded to version 11.  at first I didn't understand this untill my sister came down and out of the blue mentioned that she did it cause it asked her to when she came into my room to burn a CD... :doubt:

because I didn't have enough problems with my computer already, is it even friking posable to down grade WMP?

You can choose your friends.....

The only thing I can suggest you try is the Add/Remove programs, but I strongly suspect in the case of WMP you are going to be out of luck, it may have backed up the old files, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Yeah, I just checked my own version of WMP, there's no backup files at all :(

This happened to me once, IIRC I think I removed WMP from the add/remove programs list, or I redownloaded WMP 9 from the internet.

WMP 11 is actually pretty good.  An improvement on 10.  I can't remember 9...which was butt ugly...but might have worked better.  But yeah a System Restore is the only way to remove it.  Sort of silly.

Don't ever say that WMP is good.

Winamp and CoreMedia are the only players that deserve that title.

You're just scaring me is all, yes, I have used 11, and I think it's just ugly, and doesn't do as good as a job 10 did, gimmie my small winamp plskthx.

Isn't the built-in CD burning the only thing that WMP has over Winamp?  (Winamp's is 2x max unless you pay $$, I dunno the speed of WMP, I use third party burning progs.)

Winamp is pretty good. I used to have Creative MediaSource...kind of unwieldy. Good for ripping though; I use Nero for burning CDs.

My friend had this problem too; just Add/Remove and reinstall 9. and tell your sister not to install 11 again  :)

Baah...WMP 10 was aweful...not as aweful as 9 as I remember it but still aweful.  Don't get me wrong..Winamp is my audio player of choice and nothing so far has managed to dethrone it.  But I usually use Winamp for audio and something else for video.  DivX player used to be good but buggy and crashed a fair bit so WMP has generally been my video playing software.  nV DVD for DVD's.

I have WMP 10, I only really use it foy playing mp3s or movies on a double click, so as long as it works, it really doesn't bother me what it looks like or anything,

For videos I would recommend VLC. Plays pretty much anything you'll come across.

It will any DVD, no matter if the region codes of your machine and the disc don't match.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

VLC is my heavy artilery media player, for things WMP won't touch, unfortunately WMP is skinable and VLC is not to the best of my knowledge, and I have made a very nice skin for my WMP.

VLC (at least the version I have) doesn't play DST audio tracks on DVD's. Mediaplayer Classic does... Most of the time VLC is my player of choice watching video files, though. WinAmp for listening music because I'm used to it's media library (and MilkDrop is a nice visualization...), but I use Foobar2000 for playing individual files, as it starts much faster than WinAmp.

About WMPlayer... isn't there an option in Add/Remove applications to show updates? I have vague memory of successfully downgrading my own media player some time ago.

If your sister is keen on having specifically Windows Media Player, and you might as well have the latest version, you can download a little validator app from the usual places (certain Swedish buckaneers). It's what i did and it works fine now.
