Trying to Advertise FS2 SCP
Well, as the title of this thread states, I'm trying to advertise FS2 SCP and get its name out there on various forums that I go to. Most gamers still don't know about FreeSpace because Volition didn't devote much effort in advertising, and it's sad to see that so many people have missed out on one of the best space sims ever made.

So, my basic problem is that it's just too hard to find all the download links for everything to get people started on it. More specifically I am referring to a download source for the original unmodified version of FreeSpace 2, so that people can then download and install SCP to it next. Is retail FS2 included in the current installer for SCP as an option or not? If it isn't, I would appreciate a download link to retail FS2 so that I can start getting people to download FS2 and get its name out there.

They're all listed here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38195.msg896412.html#msg896412

Scroll down to "Section 2, INSTALLING THE RETAIL VERSION FROM CD"

Be very careful not to be seen as a "spammer"... I will post some links for you to look at... I have a singed backside already, two won't make it any better.  Just don't make your self-introduction post about the SCP... mention it in an off-hand sort of way, in its own topic, maybe under general PC gaming discussion...

These are the sites I've tried to bring the SCP gospel to:

Anyone a member of the Video Gaming Forums? If so, help me out a bit...
SpaceBattles.com - does anyone know anything about it?

SCP Installer includes an unmodified version of Retail.

Use the installer if you can. People respond better to something familiar that looks easy, rather than a page full of text that looks long and involved (And oftentimes is).

Getting people involved with the SCP is the major weakness of the Freespace community at large right now...many kudos to you for tackling it. :)

Thanks for the heads up, but like I said I'm only advertising in forums that I've already been going to for a while now. I'm not just going around registering to random gaming forums to advertise it, then I just feel like an ass pretending to be a bot.

So anyway, there's no other way to get retail FS2 installed without burning onto a CD from an ISO? Is it possible then to install SCP without having retail FS2?

You don't need to burn the images if you have a virtual drive software running. Like Daemon Tools, for example.

Just mount the images to virtual drive one by one as it is prompted during the installation.
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

FSO Installer (in my sig) will do that for you.

remember the ULA!

"you can distibute it to friends, but not make money off of it." (translated from legal text)

you can give it out as much as you want, as long as everyone who receives it from you is willing to be a friend. and with the sub-exposure freespace is getting from SoL, you better get ready for a WHOLE lotta friends...

and if you want places to advertise/distribute, i hear invisionfree is bustling with activity.

Yes, DAEMON Tools is very good, but I guess Virtual CloneDrive is easier, and does basically the same thing, without confusing you quite so much (DAEMON Tools has quite a few optional CD-Protection scheme workarounds)... both are free, so help yourself.

Why would you want to hassle with the relatively unknown concept of virtual drives and force people to go through an unfamiliar and entirely unnecessary step to get things working?

Re: Trying to Advertise FS2 SCP
:D If they are not using the Installer, they would otherwise have to burn a disc... something not always foolproof.  (Consider the fact that the free CD/DVD burning apps that come with CD/DVD burning drives sometimes do not support the burning of DVD .iso files).  Virtual CloneDrive is pretty idiot-proof, though.
