how many ships are safe to add to table?
For general information, is there a limit to the number of ships you can add to the ships.tbl? And what are the consequences for breaking that rule? Also what are the limits for the weapons table? And what are the consequences for breaking that rule as well? Will fred open still work ok? I wasn't sure if this was appropriate for the fred or the modding forums. It seems to kinda fall in the middle.

The limit is 130 for a normal build and 250 for an Inferno build.  You can't go over the limit though, it will ignore any ships in the tbl once it hits the limit.  Changing the limit breaks pilot files (pilots from the two different build types are not compatible) and also breaks network compatibility.

I seriously don't recommend breaking that limit.

In the past with old SCp builds I was able to field ungodly amounts of ships in missions BUT there were side effects.

Ships that worked fine before would cause a crash, same for tech room entries, and in FRED in places of some ship entries you'd see blank spaces or groups of characters like "yyyyyy".

It made playing those test missions excruciatingly difficult (but I did get some good screenies for posterity).
