In a really odd comparison, the internet's ability to connect people around the world instantly is probably one of the reasons that people become so isolated and individualistic.
I'm sure it's one of the reasons, but probably not the biggest. The trend of modernity as a whole has been to push people into a greater and greater isolation. The internet didn't invent the hermit, it just made it easier to be one and still keep in contact with people. For a great many folks, the internet was actually a life-saving bridge out of personal isolation.
To each their own. The biggest affect of the internet as a whole that I've seen is that it's sped up life even faster. For those people who are content enjoying a slower pace, I tip my hat, and my sympathies will go out to them as their world shrinks smaller and smaller.
