okay; I was opening a dat  file with open with and I forgot to   uncheck the box(in the red circle) ; now the file has an ie   symbol instead of the windowsfile symbol and it automatically opens with ie and I don't exactly want it this way; could anyone possibly tell me how to reverse this process. (I've tried going into the View\Folder Options\File Types; its not there). Just a Q?? How do you remove programs from the Open With section that have already been permanently deleted.

go to folder options-->file types
 

Look under Advanced
 
Change stuff.

Thanks for the Help; though I've tried that and the file type (dat) isn't listed in there. First time I saw any xp panel though..seems to have a new look.

Since its a .dat file, Windows will likely never let you directly edit its association. Your best bet is to change that association manually using the method outlined below:

1. Click on a .dat file.
2. Hold SHIFT and right click on the file.
3. Choose "Open With..."
4. Select an application.
5. do NOT uncheck 'always open with this application'

Your other option is to scour your registry. There's a program out there, though I cannot remember its name, that allows you to edit all file associations. If you could find that (or a workalike) you could just delete the .dat association directly.

There's probably an easier way of doing this, but the following should work: (registry method)

Open up Regedit and go into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.dat/ . Create a new directory called shell in here. Inside that, create a directory called open. Inside of that, make another directory called command. (command goes inside open, which goes inside shell)

Change the default value of the command folder to the full path to the program (if the program is in the windows folder you just need the name of the exe) and add in " %1" after it. (make sure you add in the space between the path and the % sign) This is how it appears to be done with the default files.

im not sure this will work right, but in your registary in \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ find .txt and change .dat to look like .txt
this will make it open in notepad (hopefully)

The dat file however should be in your file types now under internet explorer.

Finally, this is what my .dat looks like under registary


Name: (Default)
Value: (value not set)
Name: NoOpen
Value:

and just in case you dont know how to access your registary, goto start > run and type in regedit

edit: ALWAYS back up your registary before editing it, and i cannot guarantee these will work.

you find it by going to run, then type winfile and that opens the program.  Under the file heading, look for Associations, and thats where you can do everything that you need to do.

98, 95 and ME are piles of bug ridden *****

so is XP home edition from what i've heard.

2000 and XP pro are far more stable, far faster and just better in every way.

I'm seriously thinking about replacing ME (what I currently have) with XP Pro; the only things driving me away at this point are the dos compatibility issues and the online activation stuff.

 

No need to do all that, the program you're looking for is called winfile, its the old Windows explorer from win 3.x

It's far better than Windows Explorer too; there is a patch out there to allow it to support the long filenames, which makes it the program of choice IMHO.

its got enough support and XP is too buggy a platform to run on unless you're a power user.

Ive been running it for 2 years, in both professional (80xHP vectras p2p hooked up to a SCO unix server) and home environments.

I'm sorry but I'm getting sick and tired of reading crap on message boards like:

When half the people spouting that crap haven't even used it or even seen it beyond pictures in magazines and on websites. I've been using NT for about 2 years myself, ever since I upgraded to this Pentium II (what attracted me was the fact that since its written entirely in 32 bit code, as opposed to Windows 9x 16/32 bit code base, it can run up to 50% faster on properly optimised architectures like the P6 at the heart of my PII), starting with NT4, progressing to 2k and finally upgrading to XP and out of all three I have to say XP is the best.

Ok, I tried Installing XP yesterday, and it went kinda freaky on me. So I've gone back to my old OS for now. Firstly It can't find my ISDN card which just might be a driver problem, so hopefully I can fix that myself. BUT THEN! I tried playing an old DOS game like Monkey island! It didn't work! Don't tell me they threw away the Dos emulator aswell?! I loved those old games.

Thats a feature. Windows NT seperates the hardware from the software through something called a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). This means applications can't directly address the hardware. This makes the OS a tad more stable but at the cost of not being able to run DOS games. XP improves this situation somewhat by providing limited DOS sound emulation however it only emulates the SB2.0 and not the more useful SB16. Also, games that try and find the sound hardware for themselves will almost always fail however if you can tell a game exactly where to find the sound hardware you should be able to get it to work. I was able to get Duke Nukem 3D working fine with full sound. Also surely Windows 2000 drivers exist for your ISDN card, what stopped you using those?

Same here; this is one of the main reasons I have not upgraded yet. Monkey Island and its sequel were simply hilarious.

If I can get a game to work properly on WinME (which has no option to revert to true DOS mode), is it a safe bet that it will probably work on XP as well?

I tried looking for them, but it couldn't find them. But that doesen't matter now, What I've done is download every single driver update for all my hardware. So now I can just reinstall them and get hopefull compatability. On DOS games, I've read there's also a compatability feature, much like Win98/ME so I'll give it one last chance. THEN comes the ultimate test. SPEED. I've recorded my 3DMark2001 test score and I'm going to compare it to the one I do under XP. I'll keep ya'll posted. Whell... I'll just go and install XP again...

I can tell you now if you don't have an ISA sound card that won't work. While the compatibility mode does bypass the HAL PCI soundcards use different hardware settings than ISA cards which are normally too high for most games to detect. Under Win9x this was solved by the provision of DOS mode emulation drivers but since NT never needed these drivers none were ever written. The DOS sound emulation in XP does exactly the same thing as those drivers but with drastically reduced functionality (since it emulates an SB 2.0 instead of an SB16).

Oh and about speed, I actually did a speed test on my system while I was still using an XP beta and recorded exactly the same score as I did under Win2k which was slightly superior to the score under WinME.
