XP is 2000 with a few bells& whistles and from what i've seen of it its actually quite a bit faster (More responsive etc.)

I personally dont like the UI but i grew up with C:\> so i probably wouldnt :P

I just dont use it because the driver support is still young (like with win2k when i first got hold of it) and as with ANY new OS there are bound to be bugs (like win2k when it first came out...3 service packs later things are better!)

I wasnt slagging off XP, i was slagging off 9x.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

And if i want to play old DOS games..hehe...i have a friend whos selling an old pentium 120/32mb SDRAM for a few pints down the pub.

Some of the bells and whistles like improved permission handling (being able to set inheritance and force a set of permissions down an entire directory tree instead of set permissions on files, then directories, go down a level and repeat is a godsend) and the improvements in application compatibility I find are impossible to live without.

I have to admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the new XP Luna GUI either when I first saw the screenshots but after getting hold of a beta I was determined to at least give it a go, knowing the off switch was only a few mouse clicks away. In the end I didn't need it, the new shell was far more functional than I realised.

Actually driver support isn't that young. Its essentially the same driver model thats implemented in 2k and to a limited extent in ME (although you can't install ME drivers on 2k and vice versa) so hardware manufacturers have had plenty of time to write halfway decent drivers for it. I personally haven't had any major driver issues with it. As for bugs I haven't come across anything that seriously impedes my productivity yet.

I've been slagging of 9x ever since I installed 2k on my system. While I ran NT4 it was a necessary evil seeing as NT had no support for DirectX >3.0. 2k reduced my dependence on it dramatically and XP has allowed me to eliminate it completely.

As soon as I get rid of this Pentium II and replace it with something a little faster I'm going to try running Win98 under Connectix Virtual PC again. I tried it before and the results were promising but my PII just couldn't supply enough grunt to make playing them an enjoyable experience. That way

Well, I've installed XP, and I've been testing it. Well, I did get a slightly higher score on 3DMark2001 so I know now that that ****  about it slowing down is not true. On DOS games I finally got Monkey Island 2 working, but I can't get even Adlib working. But atleast I got Roland so thats enough for now. And most importantly I'm online. So all in all, I was too shocked with all those incompatabilities in the beggining and freaked out. So now when I reinstalled it with all the driver updates allready downloaded. Not a single program. Also the weird blueness of it can be turned off if desired. But I'm starting to get used to it. Hmpf, never thought I'd say it, but hey, this is a pritty damn good OS! Hell, if FS2 works, then all is fine!
I have returned... Again...

The interface looks pretty weird to me but I have heard that it can be reverted to the old-style thing if desired.

Can XP do SB16 soundcard emulation?

Adlib doesn't work since its unsupported by the Sound Blaster v2.0 that the XP sound emulation is based on. I can't get the music in SkyRoads (the best part of the game IMO) working for exactly the same reason. The "blueness" you refer to is the new Luna shell. The default blue theme isn't the best I'll admit, the only reason I still use it is neither of the other two match my wallpaper. The Silver one is pretty cool but M$ should have made the Start button something other than green, perhaps something to match the taskbar itself. The good news is your not limited to just those three themes. New themes can be downloaded for free at places like http://www.themexp.com  so don't turn Luna off until you've at least had a look at that site, some of those themes look damn nice.

The Skyroads game is pretty cool.   Some of the better DOS games I have that I can recall to memory include the following:

Crash
Descent
Doom
Dune 2
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Mission Critical
Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2
Raptor
Scorched Earth
Skyroads
The Dig

These all work fine for me under ME (with full sound) without using any special DOS emulation systems but I'm not too sure how they will do under XP. Do any of you have any of these and know how well they work on XP?

tried it, sound was choppy. Your mileage may vary

Doom
Might work, but you're probably better off downloading one of the myriad Win32 engines for it and running it in XP native mode

Dune 2
never tried it

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
never tried it

Mission Critical
never tried it

Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2
haven't tried them personally but Dark_4ce appreantly got them working

Raptor
haven't actually tried this, it may work but then, it might not. I'll try it and see what happens
Update: I just tried it and both sound and music work fine except the music seemed a little slower than I remember it. Again, your mileage may vary

Scorched Earth
never tried it

Skyroads
SFX work but music doesn't

The Dig
never tried it

I got The monkey island games working, but not with Adlib nor Sound Blaster setups.

As for Fate of Atlantis, got Midi but sound stops. Thats due to a fast computer, I downloaded the patch, but it doesent seem to work at all.

Since there is no SB16 emulation, I got it to work with the SB 2.0, but with damn poor quality sound. Alot of stuttering.

I doubt it will take long for M$ to do some sort of update to allow sb16 emulation.
I have returned... Again...

HEHEHEHEHEHE!!! I found a sb16 emulator! All the games I told you about previously work fully NOW on XP since it is its OWN emulation software! Its called VDMSound 2.0.4!

Trust me!!! IT WORKS! WOHOO!

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Oh man I loved that age of games. I remember when I got my first Larry game and it was SO cool! I practically bought all the sierra games then. I still got em in my little sierra box, for my Amiga. Lets see, theres, all the Larry's, All the Space Quests, all the King's Quests, all the Quest for Glories (two was the best), aaah, the good ol' Prince of Persia, Wolfenstein 3D, and others. Never liked keen that much, but Scorched Earth had to be one of the best and simple games Ever to come out in those days! Where else could you stock up on mega explosive weaponry and blow you're friends tank out of the ground! Heh, I still have all my old games for Amiga as well, IE Speedball II, Lost Patrol, Lost Vikings, Populous, Pools of Darkness, Rock and Roll, and others. Man those were the days !

On the VDMSound, I think the latest version of it has fixed that problem.
I have returned... Again...
