Quote
Cavallaro's work, entitled "My Sweet Lord" is a 6 foot tall, anatomically correct sculpture of Jesus Christ in milk chocolate.

I love that description.

I'd say what really offends is that kind of thing being called art.

  • The ticket to the future is always blank
It's about time that art started appealing to the tongue as well as to the eyes.

What? :nervous:

Words ought to be a little wild, for they are the assaults of thoughts on the unthinking.

I don't really think Jesus would mind having a statue made for him out of chocolate...

I sure wouldn't... I mean, I wouldn't want to eat parts of it, but yeah...

I suppose there has to be a branch of Art which is designed purely to cause 'offence'. That doesn't mean it is a bad thing, it means it promotes discussion. A screwed up ball of paper is art by definition, since it promotes discussion. Of course, my half of the discussion would be '....but it's a screwed up piece of paper' for about 8 times in a row, but at least a discussion would take place.

Same for this I guess, it doesn't offend me, but that's no guideline to go by. It promotes the question, 'What was the artist trying to say here, is it something about Jesus or Christianity? Is it a political statement towards Christianity remembering its gentle roots, or a religious one about commercialisation?'. I actually think it's far more interesting than a screwed up piece of paper.

It is art though. Better than a lot of stuff, too.

Ok let's do it.

What is art? Serious question. What do you, personally, mean by art?

(Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more)

IMO art it would be an open term but I never really gave it much thought (so I dont really know how to say it well), to me it would be something that stimulates you to think and wich has something to demonstrate (although that something may vary wich each person's view).
Still I wouldnt consider covering a room full of cheese/making a chocolate Jesus to be art because simply I cant see the point, they would be hard to do but pointless.

Wouldn't this mean that a work that makes you say "it's not art" is actually meta-art, because it forces you to actively think about just what art is and make your own definition of the word?

lol wtf

No, because what lead to the discussion of what is art was wether or not that work is offensive, not the work itself.
