I spent an hour or so installing the SCP using Turey's Installer and when i open the launcher it says "The application failed to initialize because openal32.dll was not found. Restarting may fix this" I click ok and it says "Could not read flag file." i download openal from a download site and now it says the same thing. can someone help?

So have you actually installed OpenAL?

You don't have an nVidia chipset, do you?  If you do, IIRC, the solution is to find & delete nvoal.dll, then re-install OpenAL
EDIT: It might be nv_oal.dll, I'm not sure.

No i just put the openAL.dll from a download site in my freespace 2 folder. It doesnt seem to download it with the installer. when i put openal.dll in the folder it comes up with a new error message. i cant tell you what it says because i am not on my desktop.

Yeah, I had the same problem as you. However, instead of finding the openAL.dll online and putting it in my FreeSpace2 folder, I installed OpenAL 1.1 directly from this website:

Just click on the attachment and run the installer. Don't worry about moving files into your FreeSpace2 folder. If this doesn't work for you, and you have a nVidia chipset, follow jr2's instructions.

Sorry to butt in on this thread but I can't find nvoal.dll or nv_oal.dll on my system.  Is it definitely called that.  I have a 6800gt.

Those are the dodgy 1.0 versions. You shouldn't have them on your system at all if you've installed OpenAL 1.1 correctly and been lucky.
