Coordinating games / finding games?
I'm sure this is going to sound like a really stupid question, but I'll ask anyhow -- how does everyone here go about setting up multiplayer games?  Is it common to just sort of go into the server list and see if there are any games happening you can join, or is it common to start a game and see if anyone else joins in on it?  Or is it usually something people set up in advance on here or on game warden in the forums?

Back during the days of PXO, there was a lobby where you could talk and see if people wanted to play. That's how we did it in the days of yore; nowadays there ought to at least be an IRC channel for FS2 multi.

I don't suppose the lobby would be coming back ever?
Wh00t!? Vinyl? Is it like an I-pod 2 or something?

Re: Coordinating games / finding games?
but then PXO may or may not provide TC support+stats, and may even bring back the need to have your missions validated. maybe you'll have lobby chat for FS2, but fs2net may stick around for BTRL, A3, TBP, and SoL.

I've heard nothing from Taylor yet that says PXO won't support TCs.

The fact that I'm in a mindset where I may be able to understand Takashi scares the crap out of me, but...

I think he means that TC's like the ones here and on GW have easy access to Taylor, and thus will obviously be compatible with PXO. He's wondering how the more "freewheeling" TC's (Ones not on GW or HLP) will fare when the new PXO code comes out.

They ask and prove that they have an audience interested in playing them. There's nothing official about BtRL's multiplayer channel. We got our own simply because it was a proven fact that people would want to play BtRL online.

Go here: http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/

See the online users list? If there's anyone on it, there's a good chance that there's a game up. If there isn't, start one and hope those people join it.

Code wise there is nothing specific about any mod or TC, the tracker code is totally generic.  The only thing that is mod/TC specific is the mission and table CRCs needed to validate against.  But all that takes is getting me either the CRCs or the files in question and I'll add them to the database.

Server side there is some mod specific stuff going on though.  The TCs (the main ones at least) are getting their own daemon to run with.  That means that the people who are available on that server are going to be using that particular TC.  There are already 4 different daemons running, including the default one that is open to everybody (though there is no technical restriction on the other daemons).  A mod or TC getting their own daemon does require a bit more effort on the part of that particular mod/TC, since you deffinitely have to prove that you warrant such a thing.  It's not only extra setup and maintenance for MatthewPapa and myself, but it also requires more server resources (memory, disk space, cpu time, etc).  But that proof doesn't require a huge multiplayer contingent for that TC, just a very active one, and one that will actually get some true benefit from the separate server.

Re: Coordinating games / finding games?
There was a game online a few hours ago. They were playing the Templar campaign. I wanted so very badly to join, but I couldn't join because the game was already in session. I waited forever and ever, clicking refresh constantly, but to no avail. I got up for thirty seconds to stretch, and I missed the window of opportunity by a milisecond.

Maybe we need a callback function so you can click on a game and join it the second it goes to forming mode. :D

I was actually being sarcastic. :)

But it probably wouldn't be too hard to code one. :)
