Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
Well, I downloaded and installed Turey's installer, and after restarting it a few times (insipid internet turns it self off a bit too much), everything was done. I ran it one more time after it said it was finished just to check and, well, it doesn't work. I went through the setup wizard thing, "launcher.exe", and everything, but it always locks up right after the splash screen starts up.
I recently downloaded and tried Beyond the Red Line, (my reason for wanting Freespace 2, actually), and it works great, so I don't see why Freespace itself shouldn't work..
Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
Shoot.
Run cmd Start > Run > type
Code: [Select]
cmd   //press Enter
switch to the drive that you have FS2 installed on
type
Code: [Select]
C:  //press Enter (replace "C" with the letter you have FS2 installed to, eg "D")
change to your fs2 dir
type
Code: [Select]
cd \games\freespace2//Press Enter (replace \games\freespace2 with the correct directory if necessary)
type
Code: [Select]
dir /on /s>%homepath%\Desktop\FSdirlist.txtPress enter.  you should now have a text file on your desktop with the file listing of FS2 and all subdirs, with sizes.  Attach that file here.  When you post, click "Additional Options" on the bottom (if you don't see it, press the "Preview" button first), then browse to your desktop and attach the file.

This way, we can make sure the problem is not a corrupted file... if it's not, then I guess the other thread mentioned here is prolly your problem, I'm not sure (but BtRL uses 3.6.9, so :wtf: if one works, the other should too, this is why I suspect a corrupted file brought on by multiple disconnects from the Internet while using Turey's installer... my siggy links to a DVD you can download instead, but you already did the work for Turey's method, might as well stick it out.  If it isn't easily fixable, you might want to try hip63's DVD, it is compatible with Turey's Installer.)

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
Man! Thanks for the fast answer! The fix in that other thread worked perfectly. I'm still having one problem though; it won't save my pilot file right after I type it in. Any idea what could be causing that? (And yeah, I've got hard drive space.  :P )

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
No, wait for someone else to help, I dunno why that would happen... is there already a pilot file existing in your \data\players\single directory?  If so, you could try deleting it if it is the same name as the one you are trying to create... check to be sure that the pilot directory isn't read-only (right-click Properties).  Otherwise, someone else will have to help.

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
What in the heck?! It was read-only. That makes no sense... Anyway, thanks!

Edit: Okay, I've never seen this happen before. Every time I change it from read only, it goes right back a soon as I click the properties box again! (And the pilot registration doesn't work, still.)
Edit 2: Well, it appears my entire Games directory (and the Freespace 2, data and players folders) is read only. And switches back whenever I change it from that.
And edit 3: I have found the Windows Knowledge base entry, and am following it's instructions now. Of course, it says that "This behavior is by design."  :) But I should be able to get it.
Thanks for all the help!

****. **** **** ****.

The original problem in this thread is now fixed.

**** TYPOS!

It was downloading "Root_fs2.vp" (which doesn't exist) instead of "root_fs2.vp"

Ah, right...case-sensitive... which Windows is not, by default, right?

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
Nah, don't think Windows cares. But Turey's installer does. It pays attention to detail!

No. But the Internets are. http://www.fsoinstaller.com/INDEX.html doesn't work, whereas http://www.fsoinstaller.com/index.html does.

...Is that 'cause Internet is mostly Linux / Windows with case-sensitive turned on?

Maybe. Most servers are Unix.

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
I am having the same problem with FS1, I double click the icon and nothing happens. What should I do? I heard there is a conversion program on this site but I haven't found it. My computer came with vista and it is becoming a big problem getting good classic games like FS to run well. Does anyone have a link to the program?

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
In my siggy.  If you have a good internet connection, use Turey's Installer.  If not so good, use hip63's DVD, which includes Turey's Installer as an update program.

Oh, and BTW,
:welcome:

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.
But isn't that for FS2? FS2 works fine already on my computer, I just can't play FS1 or Silent Threat.

Re: Trouble with getting FS2 Open to start. At all.

Turey's installer also loads SCP versions of FS1 and Silent Threat.  That is to say that they've been greatly graphically beefed up!  THE LORD SAW WHAT THE SCP HAD MADE, AND IT WAS GOOD

Heh, it's for FS1, ST, FS2, and a bucket load of mods 8) .
Once you see the graphics, you're going to prolly want to play FS2 all over again.. trust us on this one.  (Well, if you have a halfway decent graphics card, anyways... If you don't, they are cheap now.
