Need a few beginers tips

Ok well hi everyone I have started to learn 3D Studio Max 8 (doing a few tutorials and such) and I was just wondering if anybody had some things that you absolutely shouldent do and such then please post them here (or if its in some other thread plz post a link) or some tips to make it easier.

So far I have managed to make a very strange looking Raccon in Max in a tutorial (Not that it looked anything like a raccon) so I am a bit away from actualy making something for freespace yet.
