Picked Out a Laptop...(Need feedback)
After much digging around, I think I might have finally found a good laptop (and accessories) for me to go to college with, but I want a few second opinions...

The laptop:  Asus G1-AK024C  Price:  $1798.99
The new monitor (For dorm "work" use):  NEC 90GX2  Price:  $219.99

New Total:  $2018.98 + Shipping + Tax

I also want to get a keyboard and mouse, but I plan on going to a store for those.  I want to make sure they have the right feel to them.  Also, Win XP is will be bought from a retailer.

Now for the questions:

1.)  I plan on using this laptop for schoolwork and gaming (mostly FS2, Oblivion, and a few others).  I think it's sufficient.  What do you think?
2.)  Will the laptop and monitor both work at the same resolutions?
3.)  With the monitor, keyboard, and mouse being connected/disconnected at a regular rate, should I invest in a docking station for my dorm?
4.)  There is a lack of sound card.  I don't have any need to be doing sound editing work or anything like that, and it does have a headphone jack.  Is not having a sound card a big deal for what I want to be doing with it?
5.)  Should I get the WinXP OEM disk instead of the retail one?  (The OEM disk is substantially cheaper, but I'm concerned about reinstall problems in the event something happens and I need to reformat.)
6.)  I may want to dual boot some combination of XP, Vista, and Linux (Distro undetermined) at some time in the future.  Will I be able to do that with this machine?
7.)  Are there any questions I should have asked, but didn't?

Thanks in advance for your input.  :D

1.)  I plan on using this laptop for schoolwork and gaming (mostly FS2, Oblivion, and a few others).  I think it's sufficient.  What do you think?

Ah both links wouldn't load all the way, so I'll say what I can based off the specs in the title bar...
Looks more than sufficient for FS2. Widescreens are quite nice for web and document work. On games they typically give you the black bars on the sides to make a rectangle screen if it's an old game or the video doesn't resize to fit. If you get a laptop bag make sure it'll fit a widescreen first, some don't. Kensington makes a line of green rough plastic/fabric exterior bags, rollabouts, and a backpack I think that will take a beating. You can find them at Circuit City. Technically speaking, the hard drive is of decent capacity for what you are doing, tad average speed but in laptops that translates to longer battery life. Of which while on that subject - if you are going to be unable to get to a wall socket or won't be lugging the power adapter around - get a longer lasting battery/spare. One last point on laptops, is that if you do Photoshop or graphics work a lot, you'll find that your images won't look/fit the same way on other people's PC's due to the widescreen stretching. So you'll have to learn to compensate for that.

Quote
2.)  Will the laptop and monitor both work at the same resolutions?

Depends on what you set it at... and no that's not a dumb answer.
Native resolutions being matched would be best, but if you are going to be switching
around resolutions for games to look right and things along that order, than you'll probably
notice a difference. If you are going to work at 1024x768 on the laptop all the time, then
get a monitor that has the same native resolution, it'll look better. I once had a laptop with
a UXGA high resolution screen. I ended up putting it down to the 768 because everything was
too small to read or the applications didn't play nice. Then what I ended up with was a picture with
less quality and everything being fuzzy because of the non-native resolution being set that way.

Quote
3.)  With the monitor, keyboard, and mouse being connected/disconnected at a regular rate, should I invest in a docking station for my dorm?

Depends on how much that small convenience of unplugging 3 things is worth to you?
I've got *counts* 7 plugs into the laptop I'm typing on now, and I use it as a desktop 80% of the time.
Granted if you'll be in a pinch for time and have to go quick, yeah it might be nice. If you can get things shipped to you at school, then I'd just wait and see. Budget for it, but if you find you don't need it then you will have that $$ for something else.

Quote
4.)  There is a lack of sound card.  I don't have any need to be doing sound editing work or anything like that, and it does have a headphone jack.  Is not having a sound card a big deal for what I want to be doing with it?

If you read that over, you answered your own question. If you are doing as you list, then no
you won't need a dedicated sound card. On laptops, typically you would get a Sound Blaster external
USB or PCMCIA card with breakout box anyway if you were going to do surround sound or editing.
The sound will be processed by the CPU, maybe slow it down a little bit, but with what you're doing it probably will never be noticed.

Quote
5.)  Should I get the WinXP OEM disk instead of the retail one?  (The OEM disk is substantially cheaper, but I'm concerned about reinstall problems in the event something happens and I need to reformat.)

Ah I've never seen any difference in the OEM disc's I've gotten for Windows. It's either a system format/recovery disk (if from a company like Compaq/Dell) or a relabeled full Windows disc. I'd go for the full one myself. Personally I have to wonder why you are paying so much on WinXP? Unless there's something you "must" have in Pro or the media center edition... just stick with Home. A couple years back I picked up XP Home for $80 at Office Depot on a sale day.

Quote
6.)  I may want to dual boot some combination of XP, Vista, and Linux (Distro undetermined) at some time in the future.  Will I be able to do that with this machine?

I don't have experience in dual-booting... but from what I've read XP and Linux are fine. I believe Vista and Linux are fine... getting all three on there doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but if it's not already do-able it should be in the near future.

Quote
7.)  Are there any questions I should have asked, but didn't?

Have you factored in costs for misc items like the mouse and any other wiring, a printer, laptop bag, security software? (Tip - McAffee is evil! Norton nope, and ZA mildly irritating)

Ah go read reviews if you haven't already, check forums (besides here), see if there's been any problems or patches you'll need to get or resolve. Make a list of updates you'll have to do to all the software and Windows... because when you are actually at the point of installing... you'll forget half of it.

Other than that, price hunt some more. Google products (formally Froogle) might be worth a look, PriceWatch has been around for a long long time. A Pricegrabber.com another comparison tool. Ten to one you're better off going retail for the return policy, but there's always eBay.

Good luck.

Re: Finally Decided on my Laptop...(Need feedback)
AVG Free's good and dandy, but I still feel that options from Kaspersky and eTrust spot things that AVG Free doesn't. I came across one bugger that AVG didn't spot, Kaspersky got rid of the main thing, and eTrust got rid of its supporting files.

On the laptops, IMO Asus is still new to the market, so I wouldn't really bank on it unless the performance is way better than typically expected or something (which happens to be the case with Asus ). But Fujitsu is quite pricey for only "so-so" specs...

Don't take it to heart though, especially on the second point - it's mostly my own opinion. (it's never good to stay up late at night... :doubt:)

@JGZinv --

1.)  Forgot about the extra battery...And I won't be doing Photoshop stuff either.
2.)  Both the laptop and monitor are widescreen.  What I'm wondering about is will the widescreen settings do funky things to my games, or will there be a problem if I have to set it to a standard resolution...
3.)  Then based on speed of disconnect alone, I think I'll be getting a docking station...
4.)  So sound isn't a problem then...
5.)  I added a link so you can see it.  It's a retail disc.
6.)  I don't want all three, I might want 2 of the three dual booting...
7.)  I've already taken care of extra software and peripherals.  And I am well-acquainted with how bad Norton/McAfee and how irritating ZA is...  (I performed a 12 gauge return on my old Norton disc... ;7)  I'm going with my Comodo/Avast! pairing that I use on my desktop.   :D

Is that game worth the $50 it's going for?

I mean, I've heard it's pretty much just like Morrowind, which I have, but also really like.

Well I can't speak for all games, laptops, and video setups. All I can relate is my experience
and what I've heard. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 6000 with onboard Intel.

As to games - what I've seen is usually one of three things...
(Note that I run at the 1280x768 which is a little more normal resolution compared to
the 1280x800 it can go to.)

1. You can set the game to match or come close and all will be well.
2. The game will play and the computer will just do the auto stretch anyway.
You'll still have a full screen, it's the same thing you'd see on a DVD player fitting a 4:3 letterbox
formatted DVD to a 16:9 widescreen display.
3. As explained before - you get the black bars on either side of the screen and the
content in the middle.

Really none of these are going to cause a major problem playing games. #2 may
present some stretching distortion, but like I said it shouldn't be enough to cause a issue.
You could always set the program to run in a different resolution if you ran into one that
was a problem child.

As to brands... it used to be Dells were great, and Alienware, then both of those went down the
tube and most suggest Asus. Ah I think Toshiba just released a new one that looked good.
Really it boils down to reviews, ratings, and how it will fit your needs and budget. Never ever
buy anything with integrated graphics though.... *kicks self for being cheap*

Oh and before I forget, that may be retail XP, but it's way overpriced. I would highly suggest looking
around. Like I said the $80 mark would be about right for a store bought copy. With Vista out what they are doing is charging a premium for old software or MSRP.... which more than likely you can get the same exact thing way cheaper because someone else wants to get rid of it off the shelf.

My $80 XP Home was the same things as that with SP2... there's no reason you can't do as well.

Hmm, but I'd also use both Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4  Otherwise, you are still vulnerable to spyware.  (Use the "Immunization" feature on Spybot.)

I've also heard good things about Avast! anti-virus.  I use AVG free (http://free.grisoft.com), and when I feel like paying for it, F-Prot (www.f-prot.com)

Re: Picked Out a Laptop...(Need feedback)
The laptop looks fine, but you can do better with the monitor. I would get either the 90GX2 (same price) or the AL2051W (slightly more, but well worth it IMO). FS2 will run well at the laptop's native resolution, but Oblivion will not. You'll need to run that at something lower and upscale it.

This depends a lot on the particular monitor. Some monitors have their own, built in scaling options that maintain the aspect ratio, but many don't. The Nvidia drivers also have a scaling feature that does the same thing, but it doesn't work on all monitors and is limited to XP at the moment.

OK, so I forgot something...I've used both Ad-Aware and Spybot before.  And I forgot to mention that I will also be using Sandboxie.

@CP5670 -- The 90GX2 is exactly what I was looking for...And I'm using a NEC LCD right now, and I've never had a problem with it.

---------------------------------------------

Now for another question:  Will the NVIDIA GeForce 7700 Go support a resolution of 1152 x 864 or 1280 x 1024?  That is what I use/might want to use, respectively.  I've looked around a few different sites and I can't find a list of supported resolutions for my card.

FYI:  I prefer standard resolutions over widescreen, just because it's what I've used all my life.

EDIT:  Updated first post with new hardware.

EDIT2:  I've looked at docking stations on NewEgg, and can't find one that matches my notebook.  I've looked at ASUS's website, but the search feature is currently not working...

@jr2 -- That PDF was useful.  But it doesn't list the GeForce Go 7700, which is what is in my laptop.  It only lists the GeForce Go 7800 GTX, GeForce Go 7900 GTX, and GeForce Go 7900 GS.  But the resolutions I'm wondering about are supported by them, just not my laptops resolution of 1680 x 1050.

Do you guys think I am safe in assuming the GeForce Go 7700 supports 1152 x 864 and 1280 x 1024, since the next models in the series support it?

Re: Picked Out a Laptop...(Need feedback)
The card will support all the resolutions you want as long as you load the appropriate monitor driver on it. Resolution support on the card's side hasn't been an issue for years. (the last cards to have issues with this were some brands of 5200s)

The 90GX2 is a solid choice. I have it on one of my systems and as far as 19" LCDs go, it's still probably one of the best available. The only real downer is that it uses a 6-bit panel, although you can't really get any 8-bit one with a decent response time unless you pay $550 for the 20WMGX2.

I think I'm going to stick with the NEC monitor, as I want to use standard resolutions when I'm at my desk.  Plus, this reason:

FS2 will run well at the laptop's native resolution, but Oblivion will not.

-------------------------------------------------

In that case, I think I have all the information that I need to make my decision.  I think I'm going to buy the laptop and NEC monitor off NewEgg sometime next week.

:bump:

OK, I hit a small speedbump.  I was out of town for a while and didn't order the laptop.  Good thing, as I thought of another question:  If I'm getting Win XP for my laptop, and the laptop has a 64 bit processor, should I shell out for the 64 bit version of Win XP?  If I do, will I see any compatibility problems with my games?

I've heard you get driver availability / update problems, but I'm not sure... you could always get 32-bit XP and run dual-boot with 64-bit Linux, so it's not a total waste.  (My dad's Compaq R3000 came with a Athlon 64-bit processor & 32-bit XP... smart.  He doesn't use anything except Windows, either.)
