Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
unforunamely displaying a volumetric effect onto a 2d sprite sort of defeats the purpose a little...

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
In any event, the explosions do need some work.  I particularly liked the ones in Inferno.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky!

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
k, i looked at the vids in the link, now u think it would work with the explosions?
ill try it, but does it work on 3.6.9? and how hard is it to implement?

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
That effect uses the improved scripting system which was introduced to 3.7 branch so no... it does not work with 3.6.9s but it might be possible to make it work with those as well. Implementing that script in general is rather simple but tweaking it will take a lot of time

And as that effect is a lot more volumetric(ish) than anything normally seen in FS i doubt that premade (sort of 'baked') volumetric effects on graphics files would look good with it.

EDIT: And by tweaking i mean making the effects to appear close to the ship as this effect  has to be tweaked for each shipclass separately.

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
Would you be willing to try fixing a spherical explosion? Just curious since you're the third or so person I seen working on effects (and I posted the base files long ago with no comments...) If so, I will dig them up and repost in a day or two. Sorry if this is a tangent...

Isn't that what explosions always do?

maby, but this is like too much fire for space and not enough hot particles, kinda color that makes my eyes hurt.

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
I like it, actually. It might be good for something.

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
Quick preview... these are ST files and the one I was asking about specifically is more friendly sized, but still suffers from the pallet mismatch problem. (i suck with image programs almost as bad as 3d) :D

This one is a test and is not adjusted for the rectangular image. If you want to work on this one as practice then you'll be able to get teh better one done easier.

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
hello, very good explosion effect, but need to be darker.  I think adding a big white flash all over the screen when a warship explode could be a nice effect, as Starlancer/Darkstar one or Tachyon.

and a little question about shockwave, how can a reduce timing expansion of shockwave to make them more slower ?

use 'shockwave speed' speed option

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
Why is it so round? Was the exploding matter floating freely in a ball? Armor fragments and hull structure, as well as any athmosphere that "blows" away from the hull shape the explosion in to different forms. Round explosions look just so dumb. It's good work, but the "design" is bad.

I think the color brightness might be good. Explosion should be unfriendly to the eyes...

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
No, not really...

The various explosions found in Freespace vps look believable because they are irregular. They have bumps and bulges. They have different phases (they expand irregularly). Just like you would imagine happening when an explosion breaks out of a metal shell. It cant expand evenly on all directions because fragments of the hull are in its way. It's not just a simple *poof*.

Re: Volumetric Explotions, replacing the old ones
That texture is kind of ugly and hard on the eyes because it looks too low-res.
