Best Simulator Effort (Everyone Welcome!)
Hey all I'm starting this thread so people can post there best simulator effort. As theres no score this relies upon honestly. And to be reasonable difficulties of medium or above should be challenging enough and don't forget to post your fighter selection

My best so far was to beat 3 Gothri's in a Thunderbolt in Medium diffiuculty

The next wave of 4 darkets got me as i missed i crucial shot with a missile and got blown away when i tried to make up for it. I find what is absolutely crucial to help me survive is using the arrow keys to shift your shield energy around your fighter to where u are taking hits. Secondly when I'm on the last fighter in a group its easy to chase without taking damage so i switch to the meson blaster which actually allows your guns to recharge even while firing and it still does lots of damage. This ensures u have fully charged guns by the time the next wave comes through the jump point.  Thirdly is to wait near the jump point and ambush the kilrathi when they come through - if all goes well u can take a fighter down before they can turn to fire at you, even without me using a missile. But once u get to 3-4 fighters u need to use missiles if u cant take a fighter out quickly enough especially the Gothris which are quite tough.

In medium difficulty I beat 3 Dralthi in a Thunderbolt or in an Arrow. (the 3 gothris kill me), and 3 Gothris in a Hellcat.

I got mowed down by the 4 darkets in the Thud, and by the 4 gothris in an Arrow. That was on Easy though... I don't use a joystick and even with the sensitivity maxed on my mouse it's an aerobic work-out to make turns. It'd be a lot easier to fly with a mouse imao if the max sensitivity was higher, but oh well... I can't blame my untimely demises on the hardware. xD

edit: lol, tried again on medium with all three ship types... I either slip up and make a stupid mistake on each during the wave with 3 dralthi or get hit hard when the gothri come along on the next wave. So much for missiles hitting their targets. I need more practice. xP

Hmm, it 's been a long time since my last simulator run. I might give it a shot today though. I'm getting a bit rusty, you know :)

Yeah give it a go. I'm interested to see if anyone can get past 4 darkets on medium+ difficulty cause it seems thats where people are getting stuck

My best record were 40 kills in an Arrow on medium. I ended at the 5 darket wave.
In my opinion the darkets aren't that difficult if you keep moving. However you may not chase one darket too long because the other ones will sneak behind you and blow you up if you concentrate too much on one target.
The Gothris are much more dangerous because of their ***** rear turrets.
At least if you are sitting in an Arrow.

yes, the trick is "to let the enemy go" :) In other words: try not to focus your attention on one single enemy. :D

Wow so you got to 5 Darkets thats impressive on medium difficulty. You must be a good pilot. That should be had to surpass. I just tried it then on the arrow in medium - only got to 3 dralthi. But i was kindo drunk so i guess that shouldnt count. Everything is a bit blurry and i couldnt even aim straight.

Re: Best Simulator Effort (Everyone Welcome!)
Playing drunk is bad. I tried it (to test my reflexes beeing drunk) after having 3 beers and a glass of vodka. I ended up dead at 2 darkets in my Arrow.

Another interesting thing concerning the difficulty: I was never killed by Dralthis, they are too bad. (That's ok because I remember them being not that good in WC3, too.) Zartoth use a lot of missiles. Darkets are fast and Gothris have a good (maybe too good....) rear turret. Dralthis are....  I don't know...  just not that good. Only when there are lots of them. I suppose it is a cheap fighter so the Kilrathi produce a lot of them.

I would like to fly it myself and check out how you can win in such a ship.....

The Dralthi doesn't have a great loadout, but is still a bit better than the Hellcat imao. It's hard to hit head-on or while in chase. Stupid pancakes make good, middle-of-the-road fighters. :P Lol, as for the Gothris... I'm less concerned with the rear turret as much as the forward guns. Unless you're almost constantly changing course they can thrash even the thuds up pretty fast. O_o

Re: Best Simulator Effort (Everyone Welcome!)
Yeah I have to agree that the Dralthi are really hard to hit except when they turn on their Y axis and are very exposed to being hit. As for the non simulator missions i always found the Dralthi the most dangerous of the Prologue fighters cause they carry the most missiles and a large pack of them eat up hellcats and thunderbolts very easily. So i usually spend all my missiles on Dralthi. But for the simulator i find that the Dralthi are the easiest to beat.

Yeah but those Hellcats have much thicker shielding and armor aswell as more missles and better primary weapons. I would prefer any Confed fighter over its Kilrathi counterpart.
Except for the Bloodfang. This is the only one how really outperform the Confed ships. Can't await to see it in battle.  :D

I wonder if we will be able to fly a Kilrathi fighter in the campaign. Unfortunatenely we cannot test it in the Prologue. FRED doesn't allow you to take a Kilrathi fighter as player ship.  :(

you can, even if FRED complains about that. The downside is that cat fighters have FS2 afterburner. Fuel amount is limited and will deplete fairly quickly.

I've done it before, but it's been a long time since I have even had much time to play, let alone keep my skills that honed. That was at the top of my game. Maybe I'll get back there when life gets back to normal for me. The Thud is a slug, but it packs a huge punch. The trick was indeed to take a shot at whatever came my way, rather than spend the time going after each fighter. A good salvo with full guns can do a lot to a darket, even if it has let its shields regenerate from the last round. Combine that with afterburners and constant rolling (and a bit of luck), and that's how I did it. You may want to consider giving a little more power to weapons to keep those gun capacitors fuller. They've already got you outmaneuvered, so why not give a little more in that area to play to your strenght?

Umm... why didn't they just change the table values?

Re: Best Simulator Effort (Everyone Welcome!)
Hey all, new guy reporting in.

I want to say first that I appreciate and absolutely love the work all of you have done on this project.  I have not had this much fun playing a space combat game since Wing Commander 4.

I have gotten to the 5 darket wave on medium in the Hellcat.  In the Arrow, I have gotten to the 5 Dralthi wave on medium.  The Thunderbolt is a no go for me though, it is just too slow for me.

I regularly get to the 5 darket wave with both Arrow and Hellcat.  The only reason I pass that wave with the Arrow is because I alt-g alot! trying to save as much afterburner as I can, because once im out, its game over for me.

P.S.  I know you guys are busy and all, but is there anyway possible that you could release a gauntlet mission with that tasty new rapier model you guys have?...  Ah well, it was worth a try  :)

Good idea. I remember that this trick even worked in the original WC3.
I honestly never used the glide in any of the Wing Commander games. Maybe i should get used to it.

Re: Best Simulator Effort (Everyone Welcome!)
The Darkets are tough, but I try to save at least 2-4 missles for that wave.  The Zartoth's (sp?) are easy, they are so slow and big, they make easy targets for the Arrow.  Just make sure you have some countermeasures left.  If you think the Darkets are tough, wait till you get to the Dralthi's... they stink, and by then, im out of fuel, missles, and countermeasures... game over for me.

Some things I do that help me:

Use the slide in the Arrow.  I save so much afterburner fuel using that feature.  I live and die by that fuel, so that is a huge plus for me.  That feature alone is why I love the Arrow over the Hellcat.

Shields.  When you start losing your rear shields, put all your energy into it and put all your power into shields.  If you are using full guns, just switch to your lasers, you should have enough energy to last quite awhile.

I only ever fire off a missile when going head on with a enemy fighter.  I dont bother firing one if im just on his tail.

Save your missiles.  I try to wait till at least the 4 Gothri wave to start using missiles.

I generally try to stay on one target till its dead.  At the 5 Darket wave though, it gets tough to impossible.

Other than those little things, I play the prologue alot!  I play it every day when I get home from work.  I even set it to the highest difficulty and see how far I can get... and while that is extremely tough, I think that helps me improve my game significantly.
