Anyway, what the hell is so contradictory at First Encounter Assault Recon? Reconnaissance in force, obviously designed to go in and make first contact with hostile, unknown forces/groups. A little silly maybe, but hardly contradictory.

Anyway, what the hell is so contradictory at First Encounter Assault Recon?

How the hell can something be both assault and recon? Recon in force I understand. But assault generally means either take over or shoot/beat/maim to bits. I guess you still got the intel, but it's still dumb.

Yeah. When the probability of hostile contact is so high that you get grenades instead of extra battery for the NV goggles.

So instead of night time photoshoot of a remote storage yard, you go on to search for an enemy strongpoint in an area thick with enemy patrols. In case which enemy contact is probable and you gear up accordingly. Thats recon in force.

Maybe F.E.A.R. describes the duel role served by the agency. You've got the Point Man staying on the enemy to reconnoitre their movements and positions (hence 'Recon'), while you also have teams of SFOD-D hitting the enemy head-on with everything they have (hence 'Assault') to defeat an unknown/untested enemy (hence 'First Encounter').
