Yeah but it is so minimal that you wouldn't even notice..But i think it where the drivers that they used for the Card when the new drivers are out it will run better on XP the win98se. The link i posted in my last post shows a benchmark in diferent modes and in diferent OS.

Indeed win98 doesn't like AGP4x very much and also the amount of memory and the type of memory it supports. i have absolutly no probs whit my card ( Geforce2 ) under XP.

I only have a normal GF3 but it is running faster than the Ti500. (160fps in FS2! ) Have not really had any stability issues with it so far (aside from the usual Windows quirks) on an AGP4X interface though, and I am using WinME.

I'd say its time go upgrade the OS.  The first edition of Win98 is pretty flaky with the VIA 4-in-1 driver set.  You either manage to get it installed or it'll give you a "registry error".  Go figure.    Personally, I'd go for Win2k.  You get most of the features of XP and none of the bloat.

installed xp
installed freespace 2
installed via drivers (latest version)
installed dentonator drivers (23.11)

not in that specific orde  

but i still get the same problem...xp says the error was something to do with the new card...which i suspected...i can get the error report if someone can understand what it means and help me solve the problem

still to try ripping out the sound card....

You are kidding right? When I upgraded to XP the performance improvement over 2k was eyeball obvious (which means a lot when you consider that it takes a fair bit to make me notice especially when I don't believe in benchmark programs) on exactly the same system. I can't think what the performance difference would be over 98. Even when I first upgraded to NT4.0 all those years ago the performance difference over 98 was eyeball obvious (even in only 32Mb of RAM).

Theres a lot of useful stuff in that "bloat" such as an improved application compatibility engine (M$ actually ported a lot of the contentious 9x API functions over to XP so when they were switched in they behave exactly the same as under 9x since its essentially the same code. Its still not perfect mind you but it shows an effort and with the engine in place theres no reason why it can't be perfect at some point down the track. Important when you consoder M$ are going to kill 9x off for good), increased performanced as mentioned before, better permission handling and despite everyones derision, the new interface is pretty damn cool too (although its perfectly acceptable to hate the default theme, just don't write Luna off based on it. See the "Silver" them or what is possible over at a site like http://www.themexp.org  before coming to a conclusion)
