FS2 Crashed on start-up
I cannot get FS2 to start.  It is a new install with FS_Open_3.6.9.exe.  Problem can be repeated with both .exe and .debug.

System:

Intel Core 2 6600
2xNVIDIA 8800 GTS (SLI mode)
2 GB Ram
2 x 300Gb HD SATA in RAID 0 mode
SB X-FI Gamer
Windows XP Pro SP2 (with all the latest patches)
OpenAL 1.1 (latest version downloaded from www.openal.org)

When I try to start FS2Open through the launcher (version 5.5c), The game always crashes after the open screen (never see a single video).  Looking at the errorlog.txt file, I get the following info:

fs2_open_3_6_9_debug caused an Access Violation in module lgvid.ax at 001b:1d24151d.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.

I am at a lost as to why the game is trying to connect  and use a file from another game.  Could it be a file association gone wrong?

Some help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Re: FS2 Crashed on start-up
I did a quick bit of googling. lgvid.ax is a video codec installed by the game Thief. Quite a few people seem to have reported errors with it when it is used by other games or media players instead of the standard codecs.

Now what I'm not certain about is whether you need to be running it at all in the first place. Do a search of your Freespace2 folder for *.avi If you find any then the easiest solution is to simply replace them with the ogg theora versions (You'll have to do this when 3.6.10 comes out anyway so why not get ahead of the curve). Run Turey's installer and download the cutscenes.

If you don't have the cutscenes in avi format then report back and I'll see if I can make some other suggestions. A few people managed to solve their problems by simply deleting the file but I suspect that would cripple your Thief install and you might be better off simply running a more recent version (i.e not an official release) of FS2_Open which doesn't use codecs at all.

Re: FS2 Crashed on start-up
Karajorma,

Like you, I did not figure out why lgvid.ax seems to make itself a required component for FS2Open to start.  Looking back, I remember having installed Thief after my initial FS2 install.

As I am not really playing Thief at this moment, I uninstalled it to see if it will correct the problem.  It did.  I also found out that I needed to update the DivX Codec to support MPEG-4.

I will be looking forward for 3.6.10, especially to remove the need for codec.

Thanks for the help

You don't need to wait for 3.6.10 to swap from the avi cutscenes to the .ogg ones. In fact it's probably smarter to do it now when there isn't as much demand for them. :)
