how to edit fs1 and fs2 campaign missions...
i remember a few years back i played a bit of fs1, fs2, and a bit of the inferno campaign. i didnt have the scp at that time. but i was able to edit the missions and play them in campaign mode... for example i could edit the first mission by adding extra fighters and then go the the mission and play the edited mission instead of the default mission. well now i have scp and i cant figure out how to do it. i tried to extract the mission to several directories using the vpview tool. then i clicked on the fredopen.exe and i loaded the mission fine... but when i went to change the ship type of player one from an appollo to a valkrie the debug window poped up... and then it screwed up everything... i tried to play the mission in the campaign but it didnt play the edited version, it only played the default mission, and now i cant even use fsport fredopen... everytime i click on fredopen it only loads the fs2 ships... i even have fsport loaded as the playable mod on the launcher. also i used that one fso installer that has all the stuff compiled into one file... it has the extra campaigns and what not.

so my questions are

1. how do i edit the default missions in a campaign and play the edited versions through the campaign?
2. how do i fix my problem with not being able to use fsport with fredopen?

it all worked fine untill i messed with the campaign mission... i even reinstalled everything... still nothing. maybe ill have to delete all my files and start from scratch?

Do you have

-fredhtl -mod (insert your fsport folder name here w/o parentheses)

in your fred2open shortcut target box?

In the same way. With the SCP, however, MODs are installed in a different way. There are some folders which take precedence over others(you can set the order in your mod.ini or when you tell FRED 2 Open to consider MODs by adding -mod <insert name of the folder>, just like Mad Barber said). Then be sure to save the mission file in the correct place. Example:

There's a mission called "Strike.fs2" in a VP. You extract it to your data/missions folder. You choose the folder which contains that VP as MOD. You now open the mission stored in data/missions and edit it. If you do so, FreeSpace will ignore your edited mission because the MOD takes precedence over default FS2 VPs and other data(and there's a mission in that VP with the same name of the mission you edited).

Yep. Mobius is onto the cause here.

The media VPs and FS1 Port VPs contain versions of the missions which are higher priority than anything in Freespace2\Data\Missions. Stick FS1 missions in FSPort\Data\Missions and FS2 ones in mediavps\Data\Missions and you've probably cured the problem of FS2 not finding them.
