Not sure... what's the make/model # of your compy?  Eg, HP dc5100 available by right-clicking on "My Computer" and hitting "Properties", or listed on the back of your desktop, or bottom of your laptop.  From a quick Google search, it appears SoundMAX might have something to do with AC'97, but I"m not sure, which is why I'm asking you.

If it's Alienware and can run FSO, I'd say yes.

You should get Firefox.

And install it at the computer at work.  Without the Administrator password.  On a limited account.  Come again?

XD  Yeah.  I use FF @ home, or, last resort, IE7.  @ Work?  "D'uhm, eh, IE6 comes with da windoze"  j/k.  Actually, the whole setup is behind a single server, so they're pretty confident about their security.  (I mean, c'mon, who wants to hack a nursing home?... besides nuts like an0n, that is *shudders*  an0n, don't even think of it!  )

Hmm, ok, you're gonna have to do this, because it wants me to set up a support account, or use an existing one, using the account number on your invoice... try it out, let me know if you need help.  Linky.

Oh, and yes, I work night shift at a nursing home.  If you're ever wondering why older people in nursing homes are so sleepy, ask me.

Sooooo... anyone own a sound blaster X-fi on an intel P35 express chipset, experiencing the good-ol "Squeal of Death"?  I'm beginning to wonder if mine's starting to go out or something.  Even worse, I'm afraid it's gonna totally blow out my headphones...  actually that wouldn't be a bad thing, cause they're already blown...

Re: Soundcards and browsers (split from New music coming...)
Do you have a mic?  If so, try unplugging it.  My SB Live! 5.1 does that on startup; it un-mutes the mic for some insane reason, causing incredible feedback.  As soon as I log in, it mutes the mic (like it's supposed to be normally), and all is well.  I mean mute it in the playback control, not the recording control.  Double-click on the volume icon, find your mic, make sure it's muted.  If it's not listed, hit Options -> Properties, select the mic in your list, and hit OK, then make sure it's muted.  This, ofc, may not be your problem.  Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers & soundcard drivers.

Re: Soundcards and browsers (split from New music coming...)
Yup, got both latest available drivers, chipset/x-fi drivers.  My mic is unplugged, and I still get the horrible squeal.  I did have the mic unmuted though.  I'll try muting pretty much everything I don't need, just to eliminate any other problems.

How I fix it though, is launch the Audio Console, and switch to another mode for a second, then switch back.  Once I do that, I hear a click, which I think is the card actually resetting itself.  I actually use the different modes, but the mode that gives me grief is the Game mode.  Audio Creation mode works good though, but I have my audio levels zeroed out in that one, where I use a tweaked set of levels in the Game mode.  That's why I wouldn't use Audio Creation mode for everything.

The X-Fi never gave me any grief in my old VIA-based board, but I recently upgraded to an Intel P35 chipset based motherboard.  (Asus P5K base model, yes the Onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS too.)  Seems that this card doesn't play very nice with the microphone on this system anyway.  I tried a voice audition, and I had some horrible background buzz.  I'll try that though, and keep my fingers crossed.  Thanks for the help!
