I was thinking about if someone were to make a mod for FS2 based on the Tech in the movie Indpendence Day.  It would be pretty short (since we only encountered 3 alien ships), and I don't think it would be worth the effort, but seeing 24 km diameter city destroyers sounds cool to me.

There is a really big Ancient ship (the one used in PI if I remeber correctly) and then you have TrashMans Whitehall installation wich is 24km big I think atleast the damn this huge.

I believe the quote is "one fourth the size of our moon".  Which would make it... if we go by length, 868 km. Just over 500 mi. in that case.

Though I think it more likely they were referring to mass when they said that.

How do you know it? We could estimate its dimensions...if we watch its explosion. The debris pass near Smith's craft, so we should be able to estimate the dimensions of that mothership.

Bah, why make an ID4 mod? the whole movie was so full of plot holes and explosions that it was almost like 2 basic yankee action films had merged into one.

Even the alien mothership didn't make sense. It almost disintegrated when a single nuclear device detonated inside it. IF the mass of the ship was 1/4 of the Moon, and if we estimate that the density would be something like titanium or equivalent, it shouldn't just go boom with one nuclear bomb. Right?

And what kind of fights could we expect in this mod? IIRC the aliens had impenetrable shields, like the Lucifer. And there was no subspace around. It would just be humans and aliens shooting each other, with the aliens always winning.

That bomb exploded from the inside. And keep in mind obvious "Eyecandy" choices...that ship was supposed to blow up...entirely.

And aliens become vulnerable, at the end...

if the ship had a nuclear drive (I would assume so) it would sustain the reaction.  Also, all the fighters with nuclear drives.

Those gameplay issues are why the mod wouldn't work, unless you made it a sequel in which the humans had developed tech based of the aliens.

K, explanations for the unnecessarily huge explosion can be formed. But there's the case of explaining how humans could be equal in strength compared to the aliens.

Something like

"Hey, I dunno how this happened but we've managed to reverse-engineer and recreate and and... compress stuff so that we now have the same technological thingamadoodles as the aliens"

or

"Thanks to Wi-Fi era, we can now upload Windows 95 a virus into the aliens' computer systems without actually flying into their motherships, therefore making them permanently vulnerable.

Or maybe you could make the gameplay a bit harder for the player - everytime you want to shoot the alien ships , you got to succesfully hit it by an EMP missile . Otherwise you are done for .

there had to be some thing in that ship that goes boom...
Oxygen
Methane (Im guessing they poop)
Natural Gas
Hydrogen
... those are just some of the things I can think of that explode

They said the moved from planet to plant consuming resources and moving on, who knows what they collected and kept on their mother ship.

Fine, the gas part sounds like it would work.

But I remember them specifically referring to natural resources. Meaning that they probably stole plants and other organic stuff for their own use. Who knows, maybe they wanted to use humans as nourishment. Still, it doesn't sound that they would have harvested anything highly flammable from other planets.

Then again, it doesn't have to go boom. Like with cars. They don't necessary go boom when something goes off inside with an explosion that has the same relative size as the explosion on the alien mothership. It just starts to burn.

The whole big boom issue is due to the yankee movie industry, because explosions and bullets and speed is what appeals to the majority of movie audiences. They don't want to make realistic action scenes. They rather make fast paced, explosion filled scenes that vomit adrenaline, relatively speaking. Therefore in most, if not all, yankee action movies even cucumbers go boom.

*snort*  And, the Mothership was powered by solar energy, yes...   Nice, good solar energy, maybe a few solar windmills, none of that nasty H3-H3 fusion or anything... not, that'd actually make sense.
