How do I know if I have these activated? What are they called in the menu - before you play the game, the yes or no options you check?

Just place the VP in your mediavps folder, there shouldn't be problems...

Much better beams and glowmaps... you have just to place the VP in your mediavps folder.

will there be an option to check or uncheck them in the graphics section of the launcher?

If you want them: place the VP in your mediavps folder.

If you don't want them: place the VP elsewhere.

they include animated glowmaps, an animated shockwave, and flashy beams (VA and bob made some better ones).
