Oh I've got a couple nice ones that happened at my company. You really can't make this **** up.
1. Ticket comes in about a new printer that isn't working. Client uses our UNIX based software, which means the printer could be on a Digi board or a Jet-Direct box. I'm sitting in with the coworker to help coach her on these issues since I'm one of the few with UNIX experience.
Coworker: 'Ok, so what happens when you try to print?'
Client: 'It prints on the other printer.'
Coworker: 'Have you tried printing to your new one?'
Client: 'Yes but nothing comes out.'
Coworker: 'Does it "try" to print or do you maybe get any errors on the screen?'
Client: 'No, nothing happens at all.'
Coworker: 'Ok, maybe it's the connection. Is the printer hooked up to a digi-board or maybe a Jet Direct box?'
Client: 'I don't think so.'
Coworker: 'Well, are you able to get to the back of the printer to see the cables?'
Client: 'Maybe... [silence while the lady gets up and moves around] Well, I can't see the back. I can see part of the side through the hole on the side of the box.'
I muted her phone and fell out of my chair.
She was looking through the handle-hole in the cardboard box in which the printer was still securely packed.
2. Similar situation, new printer that the client's tech had supposedly setup. Unfortunately I didn't get to hear this one first hand. The fun part is that we had begun using 'GoToAssist' a remote control program that lets our clients request a session over the 'net and our techs pick up on the 'call'. Most tech centers use similar products now.
Coworker: 'Ok, I'm connected and can see your screen now.'
Client: 'Oh do I get to see you?'
Coworker: 'Haha, no, I just see what you see on the screen.'
Client: 'Oh well. Ok, so when I print (tries to print) see? It doesn't do anything.'
Coworker: 'Well, I see the printer is installed here... yep, the job is stuck. This is setup to point to an IP address. Do you know if your printer is using a jet direct box?'
Client: 'I'm not sure... how do I tell?'
Coworker: 'Well, it seems like your PC isn't seeing the printer at all. We may have to check the connections.'
Client: 'Oh! Hold on, I think I know... [short pause] There! Howabout now?'
Coworker: 'Well, no.. what did you do?'
Client: 'I turned the monitor so you can see the printer now.'
