Blast From the Past -- Parts 1-5 of 5
I thought it would be cool to link to some of the old FreeSpace fanfiction that was produced for the original marketing by Interplay.  So, without further ado, I bring you the first in a series of five stories.  New stories will be added to this post each week.

Predator by Fred Saberhagen

Hammer of Light, Omen of Darkness by Simon Hawke

Freefall in Darkness by Jeff Grubb

A Thousand Years, by Clayton Emery

A Veteran of the Great War by Brian M. Thomsen

Re: Blast From the Past -- Part 1
I always liked Saberhagen, and Predator's a pretty good story. Not as good as some of the shorts from Berserker, but decent.

Eh?  Is that first "not" supposed to be there?

K.

Are any of the "Berserker" stories online?

Re: Blast From the Past -- Part 1
They're a series of novels he wrote. Off the top of my head I can think of Berserker, Berserker Base (compliation with other authors), Brother Assassin, Berserker Fury (which is basically a spaceborne reply of the Battle of Midway, and hence I think it's a lost cause creatively; the glaring aberration).

I know there are others. They were listed in the back of my copy of Berserker; I just can't remember the names at this moment. IIRC I can tentatively name one as "Berserker: Blue Death".

Re: Blast From the Past -- Part 1
(...) FreeSpace fanfiction... produced by Interplay

Since FreeSpace was produced by Interplay, I wouldn't call that fan fiction per ce... although I wouldn't call it canon either, unless Volition was involved in the making of this? If it was, I guess that would make it a valid canon reference source (for what it's worth)... if it wasn't then I guess it couldn't be classified as :v:-confirmed canon but it still wouldn't be fan fiction IMHO. So... what do you reckon, how canon is that, if at all? :nervous:

Good read, in any case. :)

Speaking of fanfics, I've loved Eishtmo's retelling of the events of FS1 ever since I first stumbled across it.  If there were ever to be a FS movie, I'd want it to be something like this.

Story 2 is up!  This one is my favorite out of all five... and not just because of Lt. Rafferty. ;)

I reviewed this page with StumbleUpon... if any of you use this service, hit your thumbs up button after clicking here (This is to get rid of the "topicseen=new" code on top and only point at the thread http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,49647.0.html itself... just click the link, when the thread reloads, hit thumbs up.  ;) )

:D What do you say, children?

Thank you Goob!

Reading Story 2 right now... very good, just sounds like the guy who wrote it has never seen TVFight so I wouldn't counsider it a canon source.  :p

 :eek2:

Wow... I'll have to read that in its entirety sometime. Looks incredible.

Speaking of Eishtmo, I seem to recall there being another story by him... something about the destruction of Earth and a leader called "the Eishtmo"  :p.

It was in a really old thread, but didn't contain the full story. Which is too bad, cause it sounded fun.

Self-insertion is bad, m'kay? Otherwise Eish' story is not horrible, but not great either. His sins are of the storytelling more than technical variety, which puts him in the acceptable range.

Story 3 is now up.  It's a different take on Hall Fight, with a horror movie twist.

Re: Blast From the Past -- Parts 1, 2, and 3
Next fanfic is up.  I confess I'm rather unimpressed by this one; it's basically a four-page dogfight, written by someone who apparently didn't do their homework.  For one, the correct translation is "ten thousand years", not "one thousand years"; and for another, the ship and weapon descriptions are laughably inaccurate.  For example:

Quote
From twenty meters Atsuko triggered her lasers. This close, the ML-16s vaporized the Shivan shields and destabilized the hull into red-gold slag.

SHOOP DA WHOOP! That sure shows some self-control, waiting until the enemy is at 20 metres range... considering that many of the ships are almost that big themselves.

...by the way, is there any way to make damage variable (function of range) for energy-based primary weapons? Not projectiles obviously, but blobs definitely should do that...
