Error: Wed Cursor Bitmap Not Found - not sure what to do next
OK -- so last night I was knee-deep in fiddling with graphical settings and decided to reinstall FS2 entirely, just to give myself a clean slate to work with.

Unfortunately, this has not been a good move.  Since reinstalling, I am getting the following message when I run the game:

Web cursor bitmap not found.
This is most likely due to one of three reasons:
1) You're running FreeSpace Open from somewhere other than your FreeSpace 2 folder;
2) You've somehow corrupted your FreeSpace 2 installation;
3) You haven't installed FreeSpace 2 at all.

Number 1 can be fixed by simply moving the FreeSpace Open executable file to the FreeSpace 2 folder.
Numbers 2 and 3 can be fixed by installing or reinstalling FreeSpace 2.  If neither of these solutions fixes
your problem, you've found a bug and should report it.

I would like to note that I am not running the game from somewhere other than its folder -- I am double clicking on the main executable which is sitting in the directory it was installed to.  I have made no changes, not running any mods, this is happening immediately after install completes.

To 'uninstall' my existing FS2, I deleted the directory entirely.  To reinstall, I used Turey's installer, and that is when the FS2 directory was created.  Also, when this initially happened, I deleted the install, and installed it again, and the same thing happened -- so at this point, reinstalling is not going to help.

Has anything recently changed with the installer, or is there some sort of residual information from my previous FS2 lurking somewhere (registry?).  Do I need to right click on the executable and edit the preferences for any reason?

In the next post, I will post the error log file from the game.

Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Run the debug build instead and when it crashes out post the FS2_open.log you'll now find in your data folder. That should be all we need to solve the problem with luck.

OK, I'll do that when I get back home tonight and we'll see what the deal it.  Thanks.

Re: Error: Wed Cursor Bitmap Not Found - not sure what to do next
OK, I ran the debug executable.  First off, it gives a slightly different error message:

Error:
Web cursor bitmap not found.  This is most likely due to one of three reasons:
   1) You're running FreeSpace Open from somewhere other than your FreeSpace 2 folder;
   2) You've somehow corrupted your FreeSpace 2 installation;
   3) You haven't installed FreeSpace 2 at all.
Number 1 can be fixed by simply moving the FreeSpace Open executable file to the FreeSpace 2 folder.  Numbers 2 and 3 can be fixed by installing or reinstalling FreeSpace 2.  If neither of these solutions fixes your problem, you've found a bug and should report it.

ie:  it actually shows something listed under 'call stack'.

Now, here's the text of the .log file:

I just said this to some new dude in another thread. I think it's because the Installer isn't downloading FS2 at the moment. You have to get it manually, for example from HotU.

It all seems to be there.  I hope that's not the case, because setting up the SCP manually is not fun (for me).

A note to the members of Something Awful Forums
Hello, my name is Turey, and I wrote the FreeSpace Open Installer. All of you at Something Awful seem to have taken quite an interest in both FreeSpace Open and my Installer. I'm always glad to see more people become interested in FreeSpace Open, but the addition of the SA traffic to the normal traffic has caused a problem for one of the file hosts that the Installer relies on. As such, the retail files and the Derelict mod campaign have been temporarily removed from the Installer.

I understand that this is inconvenient, but it has to be done. In the meantime, here's an alternative method of downloading. If you download the HotU Version, then run my Installer on top of it, it should result in an almost identical install to what you would have gotten with the retail files in my Installer. If you're looking for Derelict, you can get it from Hades-Combine.

Thank you for your cooperation, and I hope you enjoy playing FreeSpace Open.
