Re: Skin made to mimic Stem Cells
I haven't looked into this but isn't the exact headline that they can clone Adult stem cells? And that it's already been announced that they're nowhere near as maleable or versatile as embryonic cells?

Still good news in that people now don't have to be 'harvested' for them but when countless embryos are being discarded every week in fertilisation clinics and the like it seems like a small victory to me.

But a victory nonetheless.

RTFW man :)

From the headline: "Human skin cells have been reprogrammed by two groups of scientists to mimic embryonic stem cells with the potential to become any tissue in the body."

Thats truly amazing news.  If this works without drawbacks then we'll have the ability to have large quantities of cells that can do anything we want them to with no moral objections as its just skin and you can grow that easily.

Also read somewhere that since these cells are your own, it reduces rejection from the body.

A discovery truly worthy of a Nobel Prize, in my opinion. It opens up a lot of doors while finding a way out of one of the hottest debates in biological research. Brilliant! Of course, it will be some time before this is up and ready to go, but it is awesome news!

Whoops, my bad. Excellent stuff. Now not to point fingers but I'm positive RTE (Ireland's national broadcaster; only slightly less prestigious than the bbc :D ) reported it as adult cells.

Those buffoons!

Kewl.  :)

Now they need to learn exactly how to manipulate the cells to specialize into specified cell types and whether or not they can make them grow into functional, correctly formed transplant organs outside body.

Nah, I've got no objections... we'll use your components, how's that?  Oh, wait, we have to go back in time and get you in embryo form to make it kosher... forgot about that.  :p  But yeah, this is great news.

Hmm, I do wonder how the Jehova's Witnesses and others who (for example) are against blood transfusions and organ transplants would deal with the prospect of havign some part of theirs replaced with another generated by their very own genome?

Whinge, whinge, whinge. My point was that this skin-based method of producing stem-cells would put an end to the Christian lobby's asinine complaints, so pipe down.

I was more focussed on your poignant, cutting quip against foetus-based stem-cells. In fact, I was so taken aback by how ingeniously worded and well-crafted it was, it must blocked out everything else in your incredibly well informed and excellently-worded post.

Exellent!  I was successful in predicting your response, then.  *snickers*  Now who's whining?  EDIT: Oh, and your sarcasm fools no-one.  I know what you're thinking, so why not just swear at me and be done with it?  :p
