What this means is that Verizon can offer consumers a wider variety of choice than they could get from other networks, right?

So it's not exactly an altruistic move. It could be a reaction to the iPhone, to prevent AT&T from gaining a heavy influx of customers. Notice how the iPhone is a big enough deal that they actually bothered to mention it in the article. I don't actually know if there's been a significant number of people switching over to AT&T just for the iPhone, but it makes me wonder.

Anyone hear about the kid who hacked the iPhone, threatened to sell it to Verizon, and Apple/Mac paid him off big time? Sorry, I can't find a linky...
