It'd work good on a high end (1750$+) PC, too.

I've seen it work well on an $800.00 ($870.00 if you count the old case/monitor) PC. Though, it appears to be getting slower by the month.

Yeah, but 1750$ will run Vista good. My friends laptop is 2500$ and runs Ultimate great. I sneeze at these 400$ P4s that are advertised as "Vista Capable".

If you just want to run the OS, it's all about optimizing it correctly. The $800 machine will run it just as well if you set up things right, and you can come close to maxing out current consumer desktop hardware for $1300 or so anyway.

Let me clarify my previous statement.

The $800.00 machine* was running Vista Business edition with all of the eye-candy at full**. It ran well***.

*It was AMD/NVidia based.
**To my knowledge.
***It ran flawlessly.

I've noticed that prices have gone up dramatically without actually going up. I built a PC a few days ago for 1600$ total, and now the EXACT same PC is 1850$. I think part of it is the removal of free shipping on large orders. It's now 90$ min.

[...] the hardware, which is often lousy for the price.

Seconded.

Thirded.  I have seen more 2x Ram and a better processor on a $600 PC than on a $1500 iMac.  Why would I buy a more expensive comp with lower performance, and an OS that doesn't run the programs I want just because it looks btter and is more "user friendly?"
