I have to hit "no" about 17 times before EVERY MISSION and even on restart, it's insane, someone help?  (or at least tell me why the game is trying to load backgrounds that I though I have disabled)

If by bgs you mean Beyond the Red Line, how have you installed it and how are you running it? It is a standalone, after all. Not a mod. It should be run completely independently from your FreeSpace installation.

He means backgrounds. And the problem is that his graphics card doesn't seem able to handle DDS files.

StarBomber, what kind of PC do you have? What graphics card?

Until you get the problem sorted you can almost certainly play the game by clicking on the No Mods button in the launcher's Mod tab. That will revert the game to FS2 retail graphics but it should work and allow you to play the game while we figure out what your problem is.
