fs2open 3.6.10 and opengl
Hello,

just like others, im a new one and the new fs2open 3.6.10 wont start on my system with the mediaVP. Its an 4600 x2, 2gig, 8800gt 512 winxp pro service pack 2.
At first I encountered the "openal" miss- this problem i solved by installing that stuff.

But now, when i start fs2open via the launcher, it says

Error: The required OpenGL extension 'GL_ARB_multitexture' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card.

File: gropenglextension.cpp
Line: 440

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

if i hit "ok" a few times, the game start but I dont see any graphic at all, just a mouse dot and thats it.

If I try to start the game "blind" I get this error:

Error: Could not load exp04 anim file

File: FireBalls.cpp
Line: 783

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
that error continues until count of 6

I tried the -no_gsl... flag- this didnt help either.

At last- here is my error log- i dont know, what to do with it:

Re: fs2open 3.6.10 and opengl
Error: The required OpenGL extension 'GL_ARB_multitexture' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card.

What ForceWare are you using?

Download and install latest drivers 169.25 (Vista) or 169.21 (XP)
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

Wasn't it actually that the newest drivers don't support OpenGL properly?

Yes but he shouldn't have problems. The build he is using uses GLSL which seems to work fine. With latest drivers only -no_glsl renders with messed up textures.

OTOH with a 8800 GT, I think he has no other option. IIRC, 163.75 doesn't support it.

I don't know what's happening.  You should be able to run it fine.

Maybe your driver installation is faked:
* Redownload the drivers from nvidia.
* Un-install your drivers. So Windows restarts with its generic display drivers.
* Re install them again from your freshly downloaded file.

I can't think of any other wrong thing.

Re: fs2open 3.6.10 and opengl
This is caused by that extension limit issue (it always messes up with GL_ARB_multitexture, so that's a dead giveaway).  I can't remember the actual instructions for turning that off though, so someone else will have to help you out there.

Re: fs2open 3.6.10 and opengl
thanks for fast answers.
@ taylor: does that mean, that someone from this forum is able to help me or does it mean, that i got some hardware probs and i wont be able to run the game with the mod- btw: without the mod, games runs nice and smooth
thanks again folks

You need to open your Nvidia control panel, go to the 3D properties and there make sure the extensions are not limited.

Turn your extension limit option back off.

Well Taylor is the one who actually recognised the cause he just didn't remember the fix. I'd have noticed the word extension eventually though. :)
