Meet the Lancer class Frigate.  I need advice about what to do with the large open spaces, and the bottom is completely featureless.  Remember, this is my first model, so don't expect anything too spectacular.
Also, this is not meant for Freespace, it's just something I made up.

My advice would be scrap it and make a new one

And Hellstryker retains the award for the most tactless for another season...

As for model advice, I suggest adding random bumps and stuff to make it look less monotonous. If you put the guns that are on the top/bottom of the model on pedestals or bars or little plateaus, it would be better too.

How come this looks so familiar?

Edit: Oh, I remember. Because it looks like a turret platform from Freelancer.
Fun while it lasted.

Then bitter.

You got good at modeling by getting told that you suck? If that's true, I really doubt you're actually good at modeling.

People will beilieve you if you say you suck; people will never beilieve you if you complement yourself without proof.

I dont quite think you understand, i never said that he sucked. its a typical first model and we all start out this way.

Yes, you really deserve the tactless award if you don't think "Scrap it and try again" is rude.

Hellstryker, be more tactful from now on. Said and done. And Hellstryker, I take it you're offering that as a model in the category of "firsts"?

As for the model Restof, it's a decent first, but you seem like what you really need to work on isn't your modeling so much as your straight up ship design. Sketchup makes it easy to make detailed blocky shapes, try thinking not in the horizontal axis, but in the Z as well. Try extrusion modeling instead of just tracing an outline, etc. Good luck, and if you need any help with the program, don't hesitate to ask, and I'm usually reachable by PM. :)

Is that where you draw a shape and pull it out?  I used that allot.

Use it even more.  Extrusion is your friend.

If you want to learn how to do more complicated stuff in SketchUp, I would advise watching the video tutorials.  They helped me greatly in learning how to model (I still need a lot of practice though).

Yea but I don't mean drawing it from the top down and just pulling it out. Let's say you wanted to draw a tube that was fat in the middle and skinny on the ends. Draw a circle, and pull it back. Scale the new circle so it's a little bigger. then pull it out again and make the new circle bigger. Etc, etc, until you have the desired shape. Then you can explode the curves while you're doing this and adjust the indvidiual vertices, so you can have complex shapes.
As an example, this model was done with extrusion:

And a wireframe:

That kind of complex curvature takes a lot of practice to get right though.

I hate to say it Unknown, but you really seem only able to make one kind of fighter-type shape. :p

If you think that looks like what I think you're referring to, I suggest you go see a doctor :p

That looks like it could be a pod racer cockpit..
