Has anybody ever made a smoke - particle effect?  Where if the ship gets hit, the ship starts smoking? Think Homeworld...

Also is there a way to change the sound of a ship going down.  I love the sound of a ship creaking and crumbling before going down.

I believe BtRL used smoke instead of those glowy things, but I haven't actually seen/played it, and wouldn't know what exactly they did it using.

Changing the "ship blowing up" noises should be pretty simple.

What you have to do is obtain the sounds you want to use, then tell sounds.tbl to use them (the ship explosion noise is right near the top of the table).

In a vacuum, wouldn't the smoke disperse to quickly to be noticeable?

Absolutely not. Smoke disperses faster when there is less force holding it in place, i.e. thinner environment.

Still, smoke would be slightly more realistic than the glowy stuff in FreeSpace.

I am just wondering what kind of "initial speed" the smoke particles will have? There is no convection nor currents to carry them away, so I guess the momentum the particles gain in the "burning process" is the only thing moving them.

The glowy stuff we get at the moment I can live with, after all, burning materials and metals would spark like that, but smoke?? Think how gases escape from pressurised containers. You may get something spurting out, but nothing resembling smoke!

I imagine it would be hard to spot anyway, if it was visible...  But it would also be cool :-P

Well if you wanted to be realistic it could vent internal atmosphere through the rupture and that mould pretty much look like smoke (only whiter)

Smoke is small solid particles suspended in a gaseous environment.
Burning/blowing up stuff is not a clear-cut solid-->liquid-->gas transformation, more like a big orgy of all of the above.

  • I'm a minefield of information.

I don't know about crumbling, but SFC2/OP has a great metallic explosion.

Sounds like girders and deckplates smashing around in the blast.

Haven't seen my copy of either for several years, or I'd offer to email it.  Anyone else got a copy?
When the reactor explodes, it's usually a sign that you've taken too much damage.
