I've seen lots of people ***** about Norton, but I myself have never had a problem with it. On the contrary, I've had lots and lots of problems with Counterspy, which culminated today in my discovery that the antispyware software was causing errors in my audio driver setup, my graphics driver setup, even my chipset driver setup. Its also managed to break diablo II, and corrupt itself a total of 8 times, which once resulted in it trying to uninstall itself, which was rather amusing.

If your going to tell someone to avoid Norton, tell them to avoid Counterspy too. Its worse.

On a COMPLETELY UNRELATED NOTE, I'm now looking for good antispyware software. Any suggestions?

AVG also has a free Anti-Spyware program... it hurts to use more than one antivirus and its helpful to use more than one antispyware.

only problem with avg is that it gives false hits on some programs,sopcast and ppmate to name 2 of them...;;;

it even gave hits on my preinstalled backup on my hdd which was create by acer !!!!

Avast! considers mIRC as a trojan.

f-Secure products consider HydraIRC and SFC3 as trojans.

Some healthy critique should be applied with any antivirus/antispyware software. Though so far Antivir has worked well.

Never once got a false hit from AVG and my slave drive came out of an acer...

Alright, with the overwhelming reccomendation of spybot search & destroy (plus the fact that I used to use it before "upgrading" to counterspy), I'll be using that. Thanks

      And if you're going for complete anti-virus, I just installed McAfee after recovering Windows entirely. It works far better than my old Norton and is far easier to configure (a bonus for us gamers). Too, Norton screamed every time I ran a program; McAfee checks it in its database, sees that I set it as a fine enough program to connect to the internet, and continues to lie dormant... erm, sort of. I know Norton is supposed to do this, but I've heard a lot of stories about it NOT doing what it was supposed to. Also, my uncle is self-employed and thus requires the best in anti-virus protection. He has always had McAfee.

I use AdAware. Worked perfect for years. Try that if you have any problems with spybot.

AVG works great, though I think I'd recommend Avast since it uses less system resources and the update isn't as bothersome.

I used AdAware as well, but it didn't really do much, so I got rid of it.

Good lord dont use McCrappy!!! Theres only 3 good AVs out there: AVG, Kaspersky, and NOD32. take your pic or just stick with Spybot and AdAware

I had the same problem with McAfee. 

Norton uses a rapid release update, (hourly update) which they warn may cause fales positives, but I haven`t had any major problems with it.

I`m currently using norton 360 and am happy with it.
