Westwood ain't stopping! :)
Possibly, I don't recall Dark Reign...

Talking about Emperor (C&C meets Earth 2150/ that other game... Ground Combat or whatever)? Dune 2 (slightly less just like C&C)?

C&C has different unit sprites than RA has different unit sprites than Tiberian Sun has different unit sprites than Dune 2000. Only difference- and I've played all of them.

mmh, excepted tiberian sun didn't use sprites :p

Yes it did - the only Westwood RTS game to date that didn't was Emperor.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. no it didn't. TS was using voxel, just like red Alert2. I come from C&C editing community, this has no secrets to me ;)

I've been a C&C fan since there was a C&C game to be a fan about.  I also played Dune 2 all the way through.  I love the C&C series and while sometimes I wounder how much innovation they do and don't do, I love the concept, the premise, and in most cases, the execution.  Its the right blend of sci-fi, thriller, and RTS in one :)

I'm also a big Blizzard fan, so you can only throw stones at me if you don't like people who like both :)

BTW: The negative review came from PC Gamer UK.  They have always given poor scores to C&C games.

All these RTS thingy started with Westwood's Dune 2. I can still remember when you had to move one tank at a time. Then Command and Conquer came out and you could select a hundred tanks and just rush the enemy base. So Westwood is the fasther of RTS.

I still like to play Command and Conquer to a certain extend but I still prefer Blizzard Entertainment's Starcraft. Starcraft focuses more on strategy than merely tank rushes. If you were to rush a Protoss base with 7 groups of Zerg Mutalisks, the Protoss player need only deploy a group of High Templars with Psionic Storm. Watch those Mutalisks die like flies.

But if Westwood is coming out with another RTS game, I will not buy it immediately. I will watch and see if it is worth it.

Huh? Ok, I guess I'm wrong then. :)

Ok, Atomica says that sprites are:
Quote
An independent graphic object controlled by its own bit plane (area of memory). Commonly used in video games, sprites move freely across the screen, passing by, through and colliding with each other with much less programming.

For voxels it has:
Quote
(VOlume piXEL) A three-dimensional pixel. A voxel represents a quantity of 3-D data just as a pixel represents a point or cluster of points in 2-D data. It is used in scientific and medical applications that process 3-D images.

Total Annihilation had 2d maps designed to look 3D-ish to the eye, with an underlying 3d terrain contor layout. The units were fully 3D though, so they turned and banked along with the dips and hills in the terrain quite beautifully. How do voxels compare with this?

Definetly.

Y'know, I never got into Starcraft, although I did have the chance to play through the human side and a bit of the one after that (Zerg, IIRC) during the army. I know what you mean about that strategy thing, but Westwood definetly added that kind of balance to RA2 - the two (3 if you get Yuri's Revenge, which I recommend highly) sides are vastly different, and each unit has a counter, etc. It's the most fun RTS I've played in a while.

Dune2 rocked, tho I happened to always use the same tactic: I built long walls with lots and lots and lots of missile turrets, I lured the enemy next to them and watched the show :p
-should I mention RTS older than dune2, like siege?-

Sandwich: voxels, are, basically, 3D bitmaps :p imagine a model made of legos, all the litle 1*1 bricks. That's how voxel models are done. so you can actually rotate all around them, go behind, under, over it, etc. TS voxel wasn't great tho, I know older games that used voxel tech in much more impressive ways ( an old fight (?) game ala tekken, the dudes were made in voxel, it was really pretty, can't remember the name tho).

about tank rushes, the addon fixed it quite well for tib sun :)

Right now, my PC's specs are not up to Renegade standards, so, I think I will skip it until I get enough money to salvage up high end PC.:D

TS was quasi voxel and bitmap.  If im not mistaken, some of the buildings and a few units were bitmapped.....but integrated nicely so it looked good.

Renegade demo seems fun.

C&C1 I liked because of the mix of modern tech and scifi. But nothing beats good old Warcraft, Orc Necrolytes summoning the dead, plus Warlocks and their Demons. Yeah baby, yeah! :drevil:

Edit: Now that I think about it, couldn't you use a voxel based engine for an RTS using full terrain deformation/geomod, etc... would be an interesting idea.

lol, water elementals all the way. Warcraft was terribly balanced.

about voxel, sure, the first use of voxel was in Comanche, for landscapes :D
Anyway, now, normal 3D ownz voxel, since it's now as pretty, and voxel won't use 3d cards.

Speaking of RTS, how many of you here completed Dune 2? Can you guys still remember the spice in the game? It never regrows. There was this last Harkonnen mission and the Ordos's base and my base were totally at a stand still. There was no more spice and I was there waiting for my Palace to produce a Death Hand missile. Really long game.:D

Have you considered the reason the games are all so similar is because they got it right the first time?

I think I did beat the game with the atreides, but yeah, I stood stuck with the harkonen and the ordos :p. There was some little things in the sand you could blow up that created spice, but that was not enough... I think shooting at worms created very little spice, too, but barely enough to make a small infantry squad :p

And I have never been a big fan of the C&C series
