Math is fun:

Went to the coast last weekend and picked up a few nice fossils - some ammonites and a few belemnite (extinct squid/cuttlefish type creature) fragments mostly.

Just ordered some new chemistry textbooks from Amazon. The ones I bought last year at the bookstore are now only about 75-80% useful due to the introduction of a new specification (syllabus) for this academic year onwards. I probably have about 7 or 8 textbooks now of varying ages on the subject lying around.

It's just an update to the existing spec to make the content a bit more contemporary...with stuff about the environmental side of chemistry, energy and resources. Module titles have changed. The only element name-related thing that's changed is the spelling of sulphur as 'sulfur' in the textbooks (I've always learned to spell it as sulphur). Suppose it uses less ink.

as for the contemporary making it... i hate when they do that, and i especially hate the ecology bull**** they keep throwing into textile chemistry stuff. my proffesor (Dyeing technology) was especially anal about the ecology part.

On my first exercise in over three years. Just as a casual thing. Sitting down to chow. I'll get some pics. Letting the cadets go loose at five so gonna get an hours kip after lunch. Before we start the hunt.

What I don't like about it is that under the old spec, you could get hold of any old exam papers from the previous 15 or so years and the content would be fairly close to what you'd expect in the upcoming real exams. There are no previous exam papers for the new spec, obviously...but I'm told that the old papers have questions that are still relevant. Previous papers from the last few years can be downloaded from the examining board's website which is useful.

I can still spell sulphur as sulphur and not be marked down for it (I always thought sulfur was the American English spelling).

Frisbee match done... and my team got clobbered. 11 to 3.

Of course, they'd been practicing about twice as much as we have, and some of our guys are new to the game and don't quite have the basic strategies down pat just yet.

Ah, well, it was fun. We all had a good laugh at the other team calling themselves "the Decepticons". We even did a sort of congratulatory cheer for them: "More than meets the eye!"
