A nice sit-down office job where I can work during the day and sleep at night.  I work graveyard shift right now, so that'll be a relief.

Didn't get the job.  They offered it to my supervisor instead, which is weird because she already makes more money than that job would pay. 

On the other hand, that means a better-paying position (and salaried instead of hourly, so better benefits) will be opening up soon, and I'm definitely in the top three when it comes to experience and seniority.  The ones who have more seniority don't have as much experience, but two of them are close enough to be competitive and have already applied for that position several times.  TBH, though, I'd rather take the lower-paying sit down desk job.  I've never really liked leadership.  I'd be good at it, though.  Seems the rest of the hotel front office staff (except for the supervisors and those other two I mentioned) already comes to me when they've got an issue they can't handle.

Why 1280*1024 and not 1280*960? Why is this sudden 5:4 ratio in an market full of 4:3 and 16:9 ratios?

i never used it.  if 1280x1024 is the highest available res and x960 isn't an option, i just use the next lowest.

because 1280x1024 monitors used to be popular before everyone went widescreen. think of it as kind of a transitional period. almost all crts were strictly 4:3, and while initially lcd's stuck to this format, the demand for higher res screens led to some oddball formats. at the time hdtv was still on the drawing board and nobody knew what aspect ratios or resolutions would result. so they just made whatever resolutions were technically possible. 4:3 in general is pretty much dead these days. i like 16x9s just because i can watch most movies and tv shows on it without any cropping.

5:4 is very oddball, and there are only 2 display types with that aspect ratio. large format 4:3 ratios exist. i owned a laptop with a 1440x1050 screen roughly 10 years ago, and 1600x1200 is a classic crt resolution that was common in the 90s (newegg does have some lcds of this resolution however). there was only one qxga monitor and that was a vertical format medical diagnostic monitor. 1280x960 doesnt seem to exist at all. there are all kinds of other weird formats like 2:3, 3:5, 8:5, and 17x9. the more oddball formats are mostly used as laptop screens.

For that matter, both my parents and my girlfriends grandmother got one of those. My mother told them to go to hell and hung up, and from what I heard so did the girlfriends grandma. My parents have a business so the number would be easier to find, but still.

Haven't gotten a phone call, yet, but I just got a weird "Cham Tao Soon"[1] email.  All it says is "I am Mr. Cham Tao Soon, I have a project for you."  No link, no attachments, and it came from [email protected].

[1] Basically the new Nigerian-style scam, but a bit more sophisticated.  Claims to be Cham Tao Soon from the UOB Group.  The UOB Group does actually exist, and does actually have someone named Cham Tao Soon on their board of directors, so when you look it up, it appears to be legit.
