Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over <number goes here> (posts)
So just did a little math, and it seems that I'll be getting paid £6.95 an hour with my new job. My first job. As a sales apprentice.

Guys I think the Devil will be after me soon, trying to get his luck back.

Edit: The standard Apprentice wage is £2.65 an hour.

How the **** does anyone live on the wage you're being paid, nevermind the standard wage?  Last I checked the cost of living in the UK is just as high as it is here.  Manchester cannot be all that much cheaper in terms of housing, food, etc than London (or Newscastle, where my wife's family lives, for that matter).

*is seriously perplexed*

Are these wages being supplemented by another job, student loans, social programs, etc?

Having boatloads of fun in the Ardennes (in and around Coo at the moment, as well as visits to nostalgia-village, also known as Aywaille, where I finished my first geological field work. Pity I can no longer study in that field.). I'm soere and ache all over from the intense physical exhaustian (For me at least, I have been twiddling my thumbs ever since I got kicked off the geology study) - and I am loving it.

Good to hear you are doing well, Deathfun, keep it up! Best wishes to everyone else too.

Thinking about FREDing - starting  it, specifically. Any pointers of what the standards of FSO anno 2013 are?

You sound cheerful. :)

As for FRED, you might want to take it into the FRED thread of you're looking for help.

For the first time in months I've been working on my campaign today. :)

Hurp a Durp.

Tried making some fried bread using shortening instead of oil & eggs. I ****ed up everything in every detail that could be ****ed up in a universal fractal fashion. The result was an an under cooked, burnt spongy mass that was completely inedible... and about half an hour of cleaning as well as a hurt thumb.

In short:

I'm following a more simple recipe at this moment in time.

Pick up apple.
Eat.

The eating phase is going well. :)

I live in London, I was only there for two weeks training.

And housing benefit, the fact that I'm not being taxed for the first few months, the fact that I live at home with my mum and that there are some odd government apprenticeship scheme-stuff is going on that will help protect my earnings for a little longer all add up to being able to keep my head comfortably (if barely) above water -barring any sort of significant financial crisis within the household.

I won't be driving anything other than my friends and family up the wall, but it's a livable wage. And chances are that before the year is out, it'll be rising greatly as the company can offer my a full time contract at any point, as long as they see i'm worth the money.

I had a recent flash of inspiration on how to handle a mechanic for the FreeSpace campaign I've had conceptualized for... a long damn time now.

I've had this campaign idea floating around in my head (and, for a brief spate, a couple missions before my computer went down like... three years ago) about a character driven campaign that centers on one pilot in the GTVA, who is ostensibly a normal pilot with little to do in the Post-Capella relative "peace".  Enter the plot device, an AI that commands him to do steadily more extreme and subversive things, in the name of keeping himself alive.  Essentially, overtly altering his objectives and directives in order to suit its own goals, while making his life easier if he complies, or harder if he doesn't.  The title for the campaign is tentatively "Alternate Instructions".

Well that's different. But how does this AI have any power over him?

Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over <number goes here> (posts)
Making his life harder if he doesn't.  Things like friendly warships "misreading" his IFF, or shipments of supplies going missing, or a loud "SHOOT ME" broadcast from his fighter that draws missiles like a bug lantern.

The idea is that accomplishing the altered objectives generates a value related to that objective's worth in points, in one of several ways.  Either in one absolute variable, which covers general adherence to the altered instructions, and is either positive or negative, granting either positive or negative effects, or in two variables, one of which measures completing objectives, and one of which measures ignoring objectives.  Having a higher complete score would grant bonuses (or take away penalties), while having a higher ignore score would make life hell.

So where is the AI? I presume it's not in his fighter if it can disrupt supplies. But if it has the power to do things with his fighter like this and more, why does it even need him?

Isn't this pretty much GTVA command during the FS2 campaign? At least that's how I remember it from that time the Sath was heading to the node in the nebula and we were ordered to pull out while I was avoiding death by laser spam and slow subspace and the guy got all: "You didn't jump out three seconds ago when I said so? fine, frak you pilot; I am sabotaging your subspace drive because you tried to avoid death so you can die." And the best part? I had killed the last Shivan ship and pressed the jump combo a second before that message. My jump charge was aborted.
