Re: Whatever happens in your life

Okay. Double standard lesson of the day.

A well-sexed girl is not a slut.

Now, if your social mores lean that way, and if you want to be a jerk, a girl (or boy) who practices unsafe sex with a large number of partners might be termed a slut.

But a girl who has a lot of safe sex with one partner at a time (or more than one, if she leans that way) is perfectly within her rights.

And anyway, why wouldn't you term them 'players'?

Wow....that like.... made sense
Unfortunately most people whom I'm exposed to (including the guys) have pretty much been (for lack of a better word) raped by constant alcohol and substance abuse, unfair social pressures (IMO) and the media, whose dramatization of the many problems in high schools really aren't helping a lot of people.

While the latter of which you were speaking of would probably be termed 'healthy', the 'healthy' people I know (who actually form the majority) are still vulnerable to social pressures.

His basic point made perfect sense.

My girlfriend is much more experienced than me, sexually, but that's fine - one of us needs to be experienced or we'd be pretty lost when it was time to have some fun.

If they're all drugs-and-alcohol and unsafe behavior, I wouldn't hesitate to call them sluts. It has to mean something.

Really, though, because it’s shorthand for a perspective that vilifies female sexuality and has no effective male equivalent, I’d rather not see it used at all.

I just bought an 8GB SDHC card for $13 shipped. I ought to be getting 3 packages in the mail then, during the next ~week.

Unless you call the men sluts too.

But it doesn’t have remotely the same connotations to the average listener.

Doesn't it? WHat's the difference between a player and a slut? but a slut is much more looked down on.

I think you answered your own question. “Slut” has more negative connotations, which don’t seem to translate when the term is applied to males.

Some people use the term 'Manwhore' (or any variations), I suppose that probably is the closest translation to slut. But I see sense in your point now, while it's really an insult to call a chick a slut, calling a guy a 'player' is more of a compliment.

Re: Whatever happens in your life
Frankly, slut as I hear it used, and use it myself, is a gender-neutral term and can be applied to males with the same ease as it can be applied to females, where if anything it's harsher on the male because of the traditional useage of the word to describe a female possibly calling their masculinity into question with those who don't use the word the same way.

Which brings me to my other point. The connations the audience attaches are beyond the control of the person using the word, and therefore judging the person actually using the word on what the audience thinks is grossly unfair unless they knew in advance that their audience does not connote the same things to it.

And also, at this point, I should note that the average useage of slut around here is not even necessarily insulting to someone, as the positive connotations mentioned for "player" below have caught up with the word and the implications of calling someone a slut now are almost totally dependent on the tone of voice you were using; I hear it used in an admiring fashion, as compliment about sexual prowess or even one's powers of persuasion, about as often as I hear it used in a derogatory fashion.

In short: Nice try Rian, but no.

If implying feminity/calling masculinity into question is an insult then you are agreeing with the generally accepted (though unconsciously) idea that women are inherently inferior to men. Good job.

Actually, I'm taking into account the fact that the people who don't use the word the way I do would see it that way.

That, and "you know, you really don't make a very good *insert gender here*" tends to burn a little regardless of such sentiments. It's true we don't have so descriptive a word as emasculation for the feminine gender, but it's just as possible to offend via trying to make one up.

As much as it's going to kick up ****, I think that's sadly true, as hard as people try to eliminate sexism and gender discrimination, it's written into the very roots our society is based on. Hell, the 'Answer to everything' aka.  the Bible is full of it, and it's been the Western World's MO for the past 2000 years. While it shows how far we've come, it also shows how far we need to go. IMO, if our Creation Theory (which I don't believe, Evolution FTW) even goes as far to say that women were created from men, I'm not sure how much farther you can get

Re: Whatever happens in your life
Actually, we did this after school one day. This discussion. We made a list of "masculine" traits and a list of "feminine" traits and then put stars next to the ones that are considered positive. End result, masculinity had I think 8 or 9. Femininity had 3. And one of those three we gave as a sorta "pity-star" because it wasn't *really* positive, unless you looked at it a certain way.

It's an insult to tell a chick she is acting "like a chick."

Ignoring all "well I personally define it like this..." comments. Because they are 100% irrelevent.
