The lines need upgrading, i.e. brighter cores with "dots" at the end so they don't look like they've been whipped up with an airbrush - no offence - otherwise, great work. It almost looks like a still of a cutscene, with the band of stars and black edges. And the more realistic stars (systems).

1. No I haven't. I'm an ex-Photoshop user of nearly five years, who recently switched to Linux (and adores GIMP more than PS). I found the commands and filters in GIMP to be similar to Photoshop's, and it only took me a couple of months to get up to speed on GIMP and all of its glory.

However, you can worship me anyway. 

2. I used the Bank Gothic font, which can be found on Volition's website. It's the official FreeSpace font.

Yes IMO you should use a different color for collapsed nodes.

Yea, since collapsed nodes still have story value.
They should still be there, but clear that it is collapsed, so we don't get inconsistencies.

They might be nodes to useless systems. Or they can be normal non-populated systems. Non-populated due to the continuous war in T-V space.
