Re: What does your name mean?
My real name (first) means "rejoice". Not that I rejoice a lot... :nervous:
My real name (last) has no meaning, or at least I don't think so. It's a family name.

As for my screen name at HLP...
Androgeos - Allusion to the AJ Androgeos of Inferno Release 1.
Exeunt - Shakespearean term meaning "they leave".

On other sites, the meaning of portions of my screen names not used at HLP is...
Altiris - This
Helios - Greek god
Geodess - Allusion to the Geodess-1 hypervelocity missile of Inferno Release 1.
Harbinger - Allusion to the Harbinger bomb from Descent: FreeSpace.
Delimis - Random name I found on my cellphone's dictionary. Apparently the name of a species of fungi. :wtf:

My real name (first) means Bright Fame and my surname doesn't mean anything. It's a family name (Actually its a hybrid from the years of moving and marying other families ever since the vikings!, Yes. i am a viking)

Re: What does your name mean?
My (very common) name, James, is derived from the story of Jacob in the bible; and literally means 'grabs the heel' this has come to mean supplanter or usurper in modern English, which means "one who wrongfully takes the place of another" which is probably why it's such a common name in the US.

Re: What does your name mean?
1st name means "of the red earth" and "first born" so, it's a pretty big coincidence that I live in a town called Redditch (red-ditch?) and that I am an only child.

A safe haven for boats is a harbor... Or port. "Any port in a storm".

Here I draw an interesting and risky conclusion that you have spent most of your life in a city, haven't you?

I wish I remembered some English vocabulary regarding geography to explain this one.

Nope. Far from. Perhaps a cove? A bay? Inlet?

Re: What does your name mean?
Those are words that the translation returns. But it is certainly not a bay like in the context of Bay of Florida or Biscay. We are talking about much smaller scale.

Cape and promontory are also returned, and also make such places, but again certainly smaller than Cape Canaveral for example. Deltas also do. Rivers can also form some, or are actually all the time in process of forming some. The rate of change is so slow that man cannot see the change, but it changes the curvatures all the time as the flow continously tries to minimize its potential energy while flowing. The end result is that old river parts dry up and might make something what we call a "sausage lake", but before that has formed it makes quite good place to set up a boat. And some others that I cannot bother to write here. I think you got the idea.

So the correct translation of family name is to translate it as safe haven for boats since it is more general than harbor or port (which both imply human made stuff) - there is not a single word in English that could do it (and not anymore in Finnish, either). That is if one wishes to use that meaning.

Re: What does your name mean?
My actual name means "Right-hand son" or "son of my right-hand side", or something like that, anyway.

As for my last name... all I know about it is that freaking everyone mispronounces it whenever they read it. They mispronounced it at my graduation ceremony, even after I corrected them not even a day before! :hopping:

Re: What does your name mean?
Actually I can't blame them, really. It's not like my name is unpronounceable or anything, just that it's German, and the silent vowel rule is reversed from English, so they pronounce the wrong vowel.

Still, it's become almost a reflex for me to correct someone on its pronounciation, which trips me up the few times people get it right.

Re: What does your name mean?
Yeah, this happens time by time for me when I try to pronounce Chinese words if they have been translated to western alphabets. HINT: pinyin was made for English, not Finnish.

The resulting mispronounciations are horrible. It would make much more sense to write the names in a way we could pronounce them close enough by simply reading the letters, but the entirely misleading system is used since it is a universal standard.

Besides UK people don't even try saying my family name (contains four wovels and a single consonant), fearing I would be upset about it (and the truth is they never get it right). Usually I'm not, since they were at least trying.
