Graphics Glitch Linux using 3.6.9 -- warped textures in space?
I tried some of the 3rd party missions, but I got this bizarre graphics glitch, so I removed their command line options (they're still sitting in my FSO folder)

However, the glitch still occurs in the FS2 campaign. The textures for the game sometimes seem to stretch to a point across the screen. This occurs most often coming off of capital ships, less frequently off of nebula, and least common off of fighters.

Attached are some screen shots of the phenomenon.

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04 on a HP Compaq nx9030 business laptop, using integrated graphics. For whatever reason, the game initially used high video settings, so I went with them and seem to get reasonable FPS (40-50).

Specs: 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium M, 512 MB memory, (~ 32 MB reserved for Intel integrated graphics card)

Full command run : fs2_open -jpgtga -fps

That's a problem with the cache. Delete the \data\cache folder, as well as the \data\cache folder for any mods you are using (e.g: \FreeSpace2\mediavps\data\cache)

Re: Graphics Glitch Linux using 3.6.9 -- warped textures in space?
I tried that... didn't seem to affect anything. I removed the -jpgtga line and recleared the cache, and that didn't fix the problem either.

I am not opposed to uninstalling, clearing all residual files out and reinstalling clean with no addons.

No, download the 3.6.10 build in my signature, and run the debug version. Post the fs2_open.log from \data.

Re: Graphics Glitch Linux using 3.6.9 -- warped textures in space?
Ok, I ran fs2_open-trunk-20080620-debug with no arguments. (will that work, or did you want a different build? I found it in the forum topic you had linked in your sig ("Get a recent 3.6.10 build"), so I assume it is the right one.)

I was running the freespace 2 mission where you first find that rotating subspace portal thing (I never bother reading mission names).

Also, I tried to create a Mantis account using a gmail address, but I never got a confirmation email.

log file attached. I also took a few snapshots, but it's just more of the same (Actually, I think it's worse.)

Sorry for that reply, the procedure wasn't relevant to this problem, but I was tired.

This is most definitely a Linux graphics drivers glitch.

Actually, I have this problem too... and I use Windows.

Re: Graphics Glitch Linux using 3.6.9 -- warped textures in space?
From what I've learned, this could be one of three known bugs (it could be more, but lets try these first)

1. Graphics drivers. Update them if possible
2. Cache. Clear out every \data\cache and \<mod>\data\cache folder in use
3. Artifacts due to graphics card damage, inadequate power supply, graphics card inadequacy, or overheating/overclocking.

Check for each of these.

And also, use a 3.6.10 build, a suggested one is in my sig.

Or better yet, the current stable Linux build.

Re: Graphics Glitch Linux using 3.6.9 -- warped textures in space?
In regards to "3 known bugs" --

1. Graphics drivers: I think they're up to date, it's just an intel integrated graphics card.
2. I've cleaned those out twice now before each run, with no results.
3a. graphics card damage : I kinda doubt this
3b. inadequate power supply : It's a laptop, the power supply should be adaquate
3c. graphics card inadequacy : That is certainly possible -- it's an intel integrated. I can turn down the settings to mediocre or low and see if that changes anything.
3d. overheating/overclocking : It is warm on the bottom, but I've never noticed any overheating problems, even when playing other graphics intensive games (such as Urban Terror, a free FPS using the Quake 3 engine)
I am not overclocking.

I'm pretty sure that the stable Linux build recommended is the exact same one I used.

Finally, I tried the next mission using the debug stable Linux build, no flags or options set. I still had texture warping problems at the beginning while near a capital ship, but when deep inside a nebula with only fighters flying around, it was fine -- until it suddenly quit on me. No log file appeared to have been generated.  :wtf:

Intel cards have usually been a pain in the arse. At least on the Windows side. The drivers couldn't handle OpenGL properly and players were forced to use Direct3D, with poor results. Recently, new drivers were released and they seem to have fixed any OpenGL issues, but I really don't know how things are going on the Linux side.

If you run a debug build either up to the point when it crashes or until you get to the main hall, then quit, there should be an fs2_open.log in \freespace2\data\. Should. If not... well, something's not right.

Dunno. I think that this is due to an inadequate GPU.

Re: Graphics Glitch Linux using 3.6.9 -- warped textures in space?
OK i haven't messed with this problem in last few months . But here goes let me explain first!

I have a eeepc 701g  which the specs are a 915 intel chipset (weak video i know).
But still it plays just fine under windows xp sp2 provided you run the newest drivers sep 07 i think or newer. The problem comes in when your running under linux. I run mint linux which is basically ubuntu 8.04. There are a few tweaks you can add to the xorg.conf to make it more playable but it will never totally go away . So i agree it's video related but am more thinking its driver issue than anything. Now if you want the debug info let me know and ill do a fresh install and provide it all for you.

now sad to say my fix was just installing the original game (yes i still have my disks. sad ain't it) under wine 1.0 and fs2'ing just fine .
