Just wondering if anyone else has run into this:

I can't remember the first time I encountered it or which campaign it was, but it is pretty annoying.

I'm currently playing the Silent Threat campaign in the most recent release of FSPort and from time to time when a Shivan dies I get a human pilot appearing in the top left and crying "Nooooooooo!" or "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" or "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!" (okay, I made the last one up).

It seems my SCP is mistaking Shivan deaths (which should be silent) for human ones (often noisy) and is then triggering the message and sound effect.

I've got all my files updated to the 3.6.9 build, BTW. I run the FreeSpaceOpenInstaller fairly regularly. I'm using fs2_open_3_6_9.exe with Mod set to FSPort.

Does anyone else know what I've buggered up to cause it?

Hmm. Looks good. No extra vps. And I assume you haven't been putting anything into those \data\ folders? I'd bet on a corrupt pilot file.

Data folders in Freespace2 and Freespace2\FSPort are vanilla I hope. However, I've decided to download a new Freespace2\data folder as that is the one I'm most likely to have pissed about with. That'll wipe my data\players folder into the bargain.

Will report back ASAP.

Waitwaitwait. Just check to see if there are any files in \freespace2\data\. Folders are ok but if the folders have files, move or remove those files. Except anything in the \data\players\ folder. And if your issues are caused by a corrupt pilot, creating a new pilot will solve the whole thing.

Gave that a try, but the damn Shivans keep on screaming.

Hmm. Troublesome.

Incidentally, I noticed that you have aaNebulae and ls_neb in \mediavps\. You can remove either one since they're both the LS Nebulae.

Do the following: download the recommended build for Windows users from my signature. Extract to \freespace2\. Then, open the Launcher and select fs2_open_3_6_10_debug as your build. Start the game and run it either up to the point when it crashes or until you get to the main hall. Then, quit and post the fs2_open.log from \freespace2\data\ here.

Hmm. Beats me. Try deleting the \data\cache\ folders from \freespace2\, \mediavps\ and \fsport\.

Tell you what: I've got to go to the supermarket with the missus in a minute (what a glamorous life I lead huh?) How about I do the drastic thing and do a fresh download of all the SCP stuff while I'm out, then put the campaign files back in place and try it again.

That should settle whether it's a bug or something I've tinkered with.

Are you using the -wcsaga flag?  WCS uses enemy death screams.

Bloody hell... hadn't thought of that. I've got a feeling that might be it!

Unfortunately I'm about 50 miles from home right now so I'll not be able to try that out for a few hours.

I'll let you know if that sorts it out.

BTW is there a way of moving this thread? I realise I should have put it under tech support.

Well, an administrator/moderator can do that. But I'm not sure of if anyone can be arsed to do that. It is quite normal for people to start various problem threads at the SCP board.

Yep, that did indeed fix it.

Launcher > Features > List type: Gameplay

I had the Babylon Project and Wing Commander boxes ticked. Untick and everything's peachy.
