Check out conceptships.org and the accompanying blog. It might be good inspiration for modelers looking to break out of whatever paradigm they feel they're trapped in.

I know that most modelers are more starved for time than ideas, but perhaps if you're just getting started, you could try to emulate some of these?

Hmmn, lots of cool stuff. Problem is, for anything Freespace related you have to follow a theme so it'll fit within the universe. A lot of those ships, however cool, would not. Regardless, thanks for the link. Will bookmark it.

Well, unless you're doing a new species, or a new era. Look at how tremendously real-world ship design has changed in the past thirty years, what with the advent of tumblehome hulls and stealth superstructures and all that. I think you could justify a big stylistic shift.

      Well, at times I've pondered doing a Vasudan Fleet like Strattcom's Terrans. But it's never gotten past the sketching stage. It's hard to design something futuristic and yet still recognizable as something else.

The Zeus is a Vaygr mothership, isn't it? Looks awesome in that picture.
 It would be great as a new GTSD builded some decades after the Colossus destruction, as the Terran flagship. The Vasudans has a VNSD too, so GTVA has two SDs in its navy. The Alliance gets ready for the return of the Shivans and a Third Great War

Actually no, the Zeus ship from that link was inspired very much by the Vaygr's original mothership concept.

Agreed, actually. The engines are completely different, and there are not glowy circles on the side.

It's in the EpicBlue skin as the Battleship. Heck, I'd post direct links to those images if I could right now. The Battleship and the Destroyer in the OGame EpicBlue skin are the best non-FS ships I have ever seen and someone really must model them!
