Simple things that people cannot figure out...
...like how to turn on/off/change dir. of the air conditioning on the bus I use - they either:

- try and twist it by the holes that the air comes out
- flick the light switches (the driver has the master conrol for the lights off so they do nothing)
- swivel it by the air holes (which is quite hard to do)
- leave it alone, because the vent is turned off/on too tight... ;)

When you're meant to hold the outside rim.

What things have you seen that have made you think: "how thick could you get..." or is just plain stupid?

I did one myself today, I said 'can you turn the light on?' when the light was obviously already on!

I was ****ing around with the wireless internet connection, switching it on and off and all that ****, I was about to call the technician when I realized I switched off wireless.

Re: Simple things that people cannot figure out...
I was riding the bus home yesterday and the woman who got on behind me couldn't figure out how to put her metrocard in the slot to pay her fare. The bus driver tapped on the picture next to the slot, diagramming how to do it, but the woman apparently had a weak grasp of spatial relations because she kept trying to put it in backwards and upside down. The bus driver again tried to explain it, and the woman tried to do the same thing that she had been doing, which was already not working. Finally the driver took the card from her and did it for her.

Go all out or don't go out at all.

The store I've worked at for the summer has a card reader that the customer has to use for their Credit/Debit/EFS cards.  I can't count the times people have been incapable of relating a big green button to "Enter."

I turned the Ethernet port on my desktop off when initially overclocking. A few months pass, it's still turned off, and I get a wireless router from a friend of mine, plus 4-5 cables of various lengths. I call up their support line because I thought it was Vista incompatible, and he walked me through the start of installation. After a few minutes, I looked and thought... hmm... why aren't the lights on the Ethernet port on? Popped into BIOS... and it was turned off. Oh well--I felt stupid. I turned it off for months and then it was off when I initially wanted to use it.

My father owns a computer, it's only taken me six years to get the basics of using it through him, and he's still pretty hopeless.

His latest trick, trying to send nearly 400 Megs of documents in one big Email attachment, pretty much the Network equivalent of putting toffee in a watch.

I watch in wonder and amusement as a customer at my friend's counter puzzled over how to insert his cashcard despite a picture showing him exactly how to do it. In the end my friend had to do it for him.

thermostats, i hate it when people turn them all the way up expecting the heater to produce more heat faster. the heater (and this applies to air conditioning too) only knows on and off, the thermostat is essentially an automatic switch.

I always shake my head in amazement at warning labels. You know the ones I'm talking about:

Hairdryer: "Do not use while sleeping."

Curling Iron: "For external use ONLY."

Butcher's Knife: "Please keep out of children."

Want more?

...because you know that the only reason those warnings are on there is because some idiot actually did these things... and probably sued the company afterward.

My favorite such story is one I heard about a ridiculous lawsuit over an RV. The driver had turned on the Cruise Control, apparently thinking it was some kind of autopilot, and went into the back to make coffee. Obviously, he crashed... and then sued the RV company. He won, what's more... lots of money and a replacement RV.

Who was it that said: "Never underestimate the power of human stupidity." ?

Yeah, because when it's inside them, you need to start worrying.

Re: Simple things that people cannot figure out...
That one was a hoax.

Worst warning label: If you can not read or understand any part of this label, do not use this product.

This guy out at our cottage has been using a massive front-end loader to utterly destroy the road. He has removed 5000$ worth of gravel that we worked hard to buy (the collective people who use the road), and he destroyed countless properties. He has destroyed trees, properties (he covered over half of one of our 1 acre properties with sludgy dirt) all in the name of "Ditching andcrowning the road". The road never washed out before, but it certainly will now. My dad and some of his friends went to talk him out of it, demanded that he replace the gravel and yadda yadda, and he comes over and asks if he can "fix" our gated driveway. My dad shows him the lake road that he made with our Bobcat, trying to show him how to make something that looks good, and he asks if my dad wants him to make it bigger.

I-di-ot.
Gettin' back to dodgin' lasers.
