I have just downloaded (using Turey's installer) FS2 onto an older machine. On this machine it runs. But I want to play it on my new beast but after coping the entire FS2 folder over to my new machine I cannot get it to start. I get these error messages:
"Please configure your system in the launcher before running FS2, launcher will now be started> OK"
"Fred2 cannot be run from a root directory> OK"
and I cant get any further. I have FS2 in this directory on both computers C:\Games\FreeSpace2\
My new computer specs: Pentium Intel 2 Duo @ 3GHz,  4Gb Ram, GeForce 8800 GT, WinXP,
What do I need to do to get it going?

Go into the launcher, and reselect the .EXE at the top. Click "Apply". Done.

One thing, it's not a Pentium Intel 2 Duo, it's an Intel Core 2 Duo.

You can also delete launcher6.ini and then rerun the Launcher.

Don't you also have to run the retail launcher once on a new machine, for it to set up the registry settings etc.?

I guess for those who want to play as retail as possible. They won't do anything there. The only problems occur when new and dumb players try to use them, get errors and come here complaining that the game sucks.

Cause if you just downloaded FS2_Open and it doesn't work on your machine you still have a backup.

I don't know where you've gotten that idea from but it most certainly does not. If you can get it to work with HTL off at all maybe you'll be lucky enough to get it to work on an older machine but since you'll have to turn off all the major features that make it worth having as well as having to deal with the fact that FSO has bugs in it that retail doesn't it's simply not worth the hassle.

If your computer is under the minimum specs for FS2_Open you're probably better off with retail.

It is, isn't it? For some reason, I find FRED2 to be more user-friendly than FRED2_Open.

Just curious... Why do you have 4GB of ram on XP? XP can on use 2GB max.

No... If he has 64-bit XP, or the BIOS switch to use 4 GB properly on 32-bit.

Also for those who are partially or entirely unable to run FSO. Often because of outdated hardware.
