More Sketch-Up Goodness
The bad news is that I lost the drive that had all my previous work on it.
The good news is that I've started playing around again and this is the result.

The top one looks like some kind of funked up insect, which is allright. The bottom one is better - escpecially cool - and disproves the myth that ships with back ends smaller than their front look crap. Unless that end is the back end...

It is the same ship, just at different angles.
Question: How do I extract and import a retail ship from POF into Sketch-Up? I know I've seen pictures by Blowfish using retail ships for comparison and would like to do the same so I can get a feel for the scale.

Well, there are a few methods.  Many of those I just downloaded from this site.  If you don't mind breaking textures, you can just export to 3ds using LithUnwrap.  If you want textures, I usually use AccuTrans 3D (look it up) to convert from COB to 3DS.  Note that for SU to import the textures correctly, they must be in the same folder as the 3ds as BMP, with the exact names that are in the 3ds file (they can change a little during conversion).  Though SketchUp will almost certainly fail to texture at least a few faces (limitations of the importer AFAIK.

Also note that BSG universe ships (since that seems to be what you are going for) are typically much smaller than FS ships.  For instance, an Orion is 2100m long vs Galactica being ~1400m.

Re: More Sketch-Up Goodness
Actually I was thinking of trying my hand at creating a high poly Boanerges next but after looking at it more I think its a bit complicated, especially the cockpit. I seem to be able to import the one from the website fine but it's really small, about the size of the man's foot. Did I miss something in the conversion process?

Yeah, the scale of those models is messed up.  I'm not sure what the units are...

Re: More Sketch-Up Goodness
I exported a copy to cob using PCS2 and then used lithunwrap to port to 3ds and still got the same result. I'm still trying to get a grip on this whole conversion process. I've been playing around a little bit with truespace as well. The whole interface just seems a bit too clunky. It takes forever to draw anything beyond basic shapes or it could be just the fact that I'm a newbie and don't really have a feel for it yet.

In what application do you plan on texturing it?

Re: More Sketch-Up Goodness
Haven't really given much thought to that yet. No matter which one I use it will involve a good deal of learning as I have no experience with either GIMP or Photoshop. For now I just want to concentrate on learning how to create a proper mesh. Learning to texture can come later.

It has to have some kind of texture or it will not show up in-game.  That is why I ask.

Re: More Sketch-Up Goodness
Oh I think you misunderstood me (Most likely I wasn't clear). I'm not ready to start putting things in game yet. The model above most likely wouldn't convert properly any way, the dimensions are just way off. I'm trying to import models from the game into SketchUp but the scale seems to be messed up.

Oh.  For that, there are a couple of ways.  If you don't care about textures, you can export a 3ds from LithUnwrap (it opens POFs), and just import that into SketchUp.  Make sure the import units are set to meters..  If you want textures, you export a COB, then use an app called AccuTrans 3D to convert to 3DS.
