The Wiki is outdated. We were meditating on it, and saw the future, which will be like this:

We'll release a demo at 15:32 (GMT) on 22 Oct 2008, which will feature 12 X-wings, 8 Y-wings, 8 Z-95s, 24 TIE Fighters, 18 TIE Interceptors, 16 TIE Bombers, 2 Assault Transports, 3 stormtrooper transports, 1 Imperial Star Destroyer, and 6 Uglies (3 of them will be on the Escort List). We'll also use 5 waypoints, create 58 Events with 29 messages, 9 directives, and the mission will be 62 531 bytes in size (12 841 bytes of it the briefings and in-mission messages). The player will start at x254, y1184, z514.

FREDding will start on 30 September 2008, beta testing on 8 October 2008, and will constantly be improved until the release date.

Then you don't get the reference to CCP and their constant use of the word "Soon" whenever you ask when something will be done, regardless of how long it will take to be released

It's estimated late 08 / early 09. That info is as close as you can get. I recommend you to actually read the stuff in this thread.
