I have a very simple question - how do you load missions into the campaign editor?  I open the editor and it shows me the availible missions and there is a button that says 'load missions'.  I would assume that you highlight a mission and press load mission, but nothing happens when I do that - so whats the deal to load them?

Hold shift and click on a mission....something like that.

Nope, that doesn't seem to do it.  I tried shift, alt, ctrl and nothing....

CTRL not shift. And then click in the empty boxes in the main window while holding down CTRL to place the mission. Basically it's the same as placing a new ship in FRED.
