Questions and discussion about speakers...
Just interested in what others think:

1.) What brand/type do you have?
2.) What do you think about "running in" speakers. (Playing loud tones just below max capacity to "soften" the
surround/suspension to make a more melow sound)
3.) Stereo or surround sound?

As for me,

1.) Kenwwod AX-7, 4.5" cone woofer and 1" blanced dome tweeter, 50mm cone "surround" driver.
2.) I believe it, it makes sense, since all materials change with vibration and movement, but you have to make sure that your speakers aren't allready run in and that you don't push them too far. (I'm quite sure now that mine definitely weren't run in.)
3.) I'm not over the top about surround sound, even though my system has "virtual surround" integrated. I'd rather have good quality stereo sound than an average system that lets you hear sounds behind you when you are watching something in front of you...when they make the "3D TV" then fine. (sphere with image on entire inside surface)

This makes a very significant difference with headphones, so I would expect speakers to be similar. Not sure if you need to do it at any specific volume though.

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
1) An extremely crappy Dell 2.1 set that crackles and pops in and out horribly every time I change the volume.  Yeah...

2) Never heard of it, so I don't know what to think. :p

3) I'd be all over surround sound if I had the cash for it.  I'd actually like to finally take advantage of one of the 5.1 tracks on the myriad of DVDs I own.  Who knows when that'll happen, though.

I have my computer hooked up to a 500 watt 5.1 surround sound system, I would recommend it to anyone. I just wish creative had some competition.

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
One of my family PCs has a pair of JBL Pro speakers equipped.

My MacBook has built-in high fidelity speakers that produce so much treble with every song that I play that I almost always use a custom equalizer setting in iTunes. :blah:

It's good treble, but too good for my ears to handle. ;)

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
I use an old Panasonic Stereo rig hooked up the EMU-1212 for my monitors, running through an ancient Fostex X-28 Cassette Tape Multi-tracker, it's old, but the sound quality is gorgeous, and it means I can mix up to 8 inputs at once through the Audio-In channel of the card.

As an Amplifier/Switcher box, I use a Technics SU-V300M2

Headphones are Sennheiser HD205's.

That's what the Fostex looks like (though my one still has the plastic sleeve that fits the cassette, which is broken in that picture), I have two of them, both are over 15 years old and are my pride and joys ;)

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
I'm used to hearing stuff at a sample rate of 22050. Maybe that's why I dislike too much treble.

Even now, I'm still not used to the improvements to the communications systems in FS2_Open.

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
im using a pair of full range pioneer speakers from like the 80s, but theyre beefy and got 12 inch subs in em. powering them i have a kenwood amp from like the 70s. it doesnt even have a remote sensor. oddly it sounded better than my old creative 6.1s so i threw them out. i used to have a second pair of quasars but i tossed em into the burn pile, since im in the process of moving and all, they added midrange and an extra set of tweeters, useful for black metal's use of higher frequencys. still i dont miss them much.

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
As far as I know, my Kenwood (pre/main)amp sounds a lot nicer than most. It has the ability to make crap speakers sound half decent. And some old speakers do sound better, mabye 'cause the new ones are all plastic, i.e. the actual cones, too.

It seems that old speakers are still the way to go. ;)

considering i spent $7 bucks on the whole setup

when i get to phoenix im just gonna get a pair of stereo amps and 4 good speakers. then i can have full quad for games, or stereo for music. if i wire it properly, i can mirror front to back so that stereo sounds good while using all the equipment.

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
I like these JBL Pro speakers attached to my family PC because they give a good mix of bass and treble, not like the other pair installed on my other family PC.

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
Let's see, I have a really old pair of Koss speakers that the power input connector keeps getting ripped off, so I have to periodically solder it back on, other than that they're not terrible speakers. As for headphones, I have a pair Sennheiser HD215s, which I actually use most of the time. Naturally, I'm stuck with stereo.

It's difficult for me to differentiate mono and stereo, but I like both so I don't really care. ;)

Re: Questions and discussion about speakers...
i realize that i hate surround sound, its a ***** to wire, its a ***** to configure properly, and usually youre stuck with a bunch of midrange speakers and one sub. it doesnt sound good if you upmix to it from stereo. that gas issues since most audio is recorded as stereo. full range quad is the way to go, stereo upmixes to it quite well, since its just a front back to mirror.
